OREM—Sacramento State used a five-run fifth inning to help the Hornets secure a 10-4 win over Utah Valley in the front end of a double-header on Sunday at UCCU Ballpark in Orem.
Sacramento State (13-5, 6-1) was first to get on the scoreboard with three runs in the top of the third inning. Ryan Walstad singled through the right side to score a pair of runners before Dawsen Bacho singled to right-center to score Walstad, giving the Hornets a 3-0 lead.
Utah Valley (2-12, 0-3) responded in the bottom half of the third as
Garrett Broussard singled to center and then advanced to third on a
Mitch Moralez single to right.
Alexander Marco then sent a home run over the left field fence to tie things up, 3-3.
The Hornets then added five runs in the top of the fifth and one run in both the sixth and eighth innings to secure a 10-3 lead.
In the bottom of the eighth, Marco doubled to left and then advanced to third on a wild pitch.
Drew Sims then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, which sent Marco across the plate to cut the Sacramento State lead to a 10-4 advantage.
Marco led the Wolverines at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a home run and a double. He also had three RBI and scored a pair of runs. Broussard, Moralez, and
Kade Poulsen each went 1-for-4, while Sims was 1-for-3 at the plate.
Bobby Voortmeyer worked 4.1 innings on the mound, recording four strikeouts with six earned runs.
Tevin Hall went 3.2 innings with four strikeouts while giving up only one run.
Utah Valley will conclude its series against Sacramento State today at 3 p.m. at UCCU Ballpark.
