GREELEY, Colo. – After combining to score just one run over the first two games of the series, Utah Valley responded to with seven runs in Saturday's nightcap along with a strong start from junior
Bobby Voortmeyer to take game two of the twin bill by a score of 7-3. UNC previously took Saturday's first game of the twin bill, 8-1, behind a complete-game two-hitter from Dylan Bowers on a windy Saturday afternoon at Jackson Field in Greeley.

In the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, the right-hander Voortmeyer pitched 5.2 solid innings and allowed just one run on four hits to record his first victory of the season. He also struck out a season-high five batters. The UVU offense was led by a 3-for-4 performance from second-year freshman shortstop
Garrett Broussard. Broussard also drove in three runs and doubled twice in the game en route to helping Utah Valley record the victory.

UVU improves to 3-16 on the season and 1-6 in WAC play with the twin bill split, while UNC drops to 6-16 overall and 2-9 in league play. Utah Valley will go for the series split in the weekend finale on Sunday.

GAME TWO
After threatening in each of the first two innings, the UVU offense was the first to get things going in the nightcap with a run in the third and five more in the fourth to take a 6-0 lead. Broussard got things going in the third with a one-out double and was moved over to third on a sacrifice bunt from
Mitch Moralez.
Kade Poulsen then plated Broussard with a two-out RBI single to give the Wolverines the early third.

In the five-run fourth, UVU loaded the bases with one away and Broussard delivered the big hit with a two-run double to right to make it 3-0. With two away and the bases again loaded, Poulsen drove a ball to fairly deep center and UNC's Jake Gitter misjudged it and couldn't make the catch as three more runs came home to extend Utah Valley's lead to 6-0.

With two outs in the last of the sixth, Northern Colorado then got back-to-back extra-base hits to push a run across and make it a 6-1 contest. Josh Glenn started the spurt with a triple to center and Matt Burkart followed with an RBI double to left to get the Bears on the board.

With the Wolverines still holding to a 6-1 advantage in the eighth,
Trey Newman walked and
Tavyn Lords reached on a bunt single to put two on with nobody out in the frame. After a balk advanced both runners into scoring position, Broussard then drove in his third run of the game with a sacrifice fly to left to bring home Newman and give the Wolverines an insurance run and a 7-1 lead.

In the last of the ninth, the Bears made things interesting by driving in a pair of runs and loading the bases to bring what would be the tying run to the plate, but
Spenser Triplett came on and managed to get out of the jam to record his second save of the year by striking out Garrett Fisher to leave the bases full and end the ballgame.

The junior right-hander Voortmeyer picked up his first win of the season to improve to 1-3 on the year after recording the solid start. Second-year freshman
Devin Smith then followed for Utah Valley in relief and allowed just two runs on three hits over 3.0 innings, while Triplett came on to get the game-ending strikeout and record the save. UNC's Jacob Salim (1-3) was tagged with the loss after allowing four runs (three earned) in 3.1 innings of work.

Behind Broussard's three-hit game, Poulsen drove in four runs for the Wolverines while
Jeff Arens went 1-for-2 with three walks and run scored. Newman, Lords and
Mick Madsen also had nice outings at the plate by each going 1-for-3 in the ballgame. Gitter and Burkart led UNC by each registering 2-for-5 performances.

The victory marks UVU's first conference win of the season and snaps a 16-game losing skid for the Wolverines.

GAME ONE
Northern Colorado's Bowers pitched a complete-game two-hitter on his way to leading the Bears to an 8-1 seven-inning victory in the first game of the Saturday doubleheader. Bowers struck out 12 and walked just one and didn't surrender a hit until the sixth inning when UVU's
Brandon Luna broke up the no-hit bid with a one-out solo home run to right.

The Bears struck first in the contest with a first-inning RBI double from Glenn to take an early 1-0 lead. Following a two-out error, Glenn then drove in another run in the third to extend UNC's advantage to 2-0.

With Northern Colorado holding to the 2-0 lead in the fifth, the Bears then added four more runs to make it 6-0. Glenn drove in two more with a two-run single followed by a two-run homer from Burkart to give UNC the six-run cushion.

With UNC's Bowers shining on the mound and having allowed just one baserunner into the sixth, Luna then broke up the no-hitter with the solo shot to right to break up the no-no and the shutout.

After Northern Colorado tacked on two more insurance runs in the last of the sixth, UVU then got its second extra-base hit of the game on a one-out triple from
Alexander Marco.
Drew Sims later reached in the frame after getting hit by the pitch to put runners on the corners, but Bowers responded by drawing a game-ending groundout to strand Marco and Sims on the basepaths.

Luna led UVU offensively by going 1-for-2 with the home run, while Marco finished 1-for-3 with the triple. Glenn led UNC by posting a perfect 4-for-4 performance with five RBIs. Aiden Leahy and Gitter also added multiple-hit outings for the Bears.

Nick Sims was tagged with the loss to drop to 1-3.
