SAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – Cal Poly scored four first-inning runs and Travis Weston pitched a complete-game two-hitter en route to leading the Mustangs to a 5-1 victory over Utah Valley on Saturday night at Baggett Stadium in San Luis Obispo.
Â
With the win, the Big West Mustangs clinch the weekend non-conference series and improve to 5-4 on the season. UVU falls to 2-4 with the loss. The two teams will close the series on Sunday afternoon.
Â
After taking game one on Friday, Cal Poly continued its strong series by scoring four runs in the bottom of the first to jump out to a quick 4-0 advantage. Following a leadoff double from Cole Cabrera, Myles Emmerson plated the first run of the game with an RBI single to right to make it 1-0. With the bases later loaded, Matt Lopez drove a run home with an RBI single of his own and Taison Corio followed with a two-run double to give the Mustangs the early four-run cushion.Â
Â
The Mustang starter Weston didn't look back from there, as he retired the first 15 batters he faced and took a no-hitter into the sixth inning.Â
Â
With the bases empty and nobody out in the top of the sixth, UVU sophomore third baseman
Mick Madsen managed to break up Weston's no-hit bid with a leadoff double to right to give the Wolverines their first baserunner of the ballgame. Following an out,
Jake Plecas then also doubled to right to drive in Madsen and get the Wolverines on the board.Â
Â
The Mustangs then managed to get a run back in the seventh on an RBI single from Brooks Lee to put the game away.Â
Â
Weston (1-1), who allowed just two hits and one run on the night, struck out 11 and didn't walk a batter on the way to throwing the complete-game gem. UVU second-year freshman
Nick Sims (1-1) suffered the defeat after allowing four first-inning runs.Â
Â
In relief,
Bobby Voortmeyer shined for the Wolverines by tossing 7.0 innings and giving up just four hits and one run while striking out three and issuing just one walk. Senior
Spenser Triplett also pitched well in relief by tossing a scoreless eighth frame.Â
Â
Madsen and Plecas led UVU offensively by each going 1-for-3 with a double. Madsen also scored a run while Plecas also delivered Utah Valley's lone RBI. Lee led Cal Poly with a 3-for-4 outing with an RBI and a run scored.Â
Â
Sunday's series finale will begin at 2 p.m. MT/1 p.m. PT and will be streamed live on BigWest.tv. Following Sunday's finale, UVU will again hit the road next weekend for a newly added four-game non-conference series at Portland of the West Coast Conference March 12-14 at Joe Etzel Field.Â
