Estrada cards 77 in round one at NCAA Stanford Regional

The second-year Utah Valley freshman posted a 6-over-par 77 during the first round of play at the Stanford Regional on Monday at Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif.

STANFORD, Calif. – Utah Valley University second-year freshman Victoria Estrada carded an opening-round 6-over-par 77 during Monday's first round of play at the NCAA Stanford Regional at Stanford Golf Course in Stanford, Calif.

Estrada, who made history for the Wolverine women's golf program on Monday by becoming the school's first women's golfer to participate in an NCAA postseason event, sits in a tie for 68th place at 6-over-par. Estrada carded 12 pars and six bogeys during Monday's opening round of play at the Stanford Regional.

"Victoria represented UVU well today," head UVU coach Dr. Sue Nyhus said. "She smashed it off the first tee and finished with a near birdie on her 18th hole. There were plenty of near birdies and just a few bogeys. Tomorrow (Tuesday) is moving day. Keep watching, the birdies will be dropping on Tuesday!"

Estrada became the first NCAA qualifier in UVU women's golf history after earning an automatic bid after winning the program's inaugural WAC individual championship a couple of weeks ago at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev. Estrada carded a 54-hole total of 2-under-par 214 with rounds of 74, 69 and 71 on her way to coming from behind to be crowned the WAC individual champion. The 2-under 214 was not only a career-best for Estrada, but it also tied for the best three-round score in program history.

Playing the field as an individual, Estrada currently sits ahead of fellow individual Holland Shourds of Long Beach State, who is currently tied for 89th with a 10-over-par 81. Estrada is also just three shots back of BYU's Allysha Mae Mateo (74), who is also playing the Stanford Regional as an individual.

The host Stanford Cardinal is leading the NCAA Stanford Regional at 12-under-par (272). Virginia Tech is in second at 2-under (282), while Wake Forest sits in third (286). The WAC champion New Mexico State Aggies are currently in 11th place out of 18 teams (292).

Estrada will continue the Stanford Regional with round two on Tuesday at 9:50 a.m. MT/8:50 a.m. PT at Stanford Golf Club. The 54-hole event will then close on Wednesday. Live scoring can be followed throughout the duration of the event by visiting GolfStat.com.
