Godfrey advances at 123rd Utah State Am

HIGHLAND, Utah — Former Utah Valley University golfer Jake Godfrey advanced to the round of 32 at the 123rd Utah State Amateur on Wednesday at Alpine Country Club. Current freshman Ryan Seamons and former Wolverine and 2007 State Am winner Nick Nelson both dropped their match play contests in the round of 64.

Godfrey, who competed for Utah Valley from 2017-19, defeated Christian James (5&4) on Wednesday. He'll face Cooper Jones in the round of 32 on Thursday morning. Godfrey was tied for second with four other golfers behind Nelson, who won medalist honors after shooting 6-under-par during the two-day, 36-hole, stroke play portion of the tournament.

Nelson entered match play as the No. 1 seed, despite playing limited golf since finishing at UVU in 2009. While at Utah Valley, Nelson was the America Sky Conference Champion as a junior and was All-Conference as a senior. He won the 2007 State Am at Thanksgiving Point.

Seamons, the 2019 Utah 4A State Champion, redshirted this past season and will be a freshman this fall. He narrowly fell in his match to Brendan Thomas (2&1).
