Shewell & Vagana earn WAC weekly awards

ARLINGTON, Texas – Utah Valley freshman Avery Shewell was named TicketSmarter Offensive Player of the Week, and Caleigh Vagana was named TicketSmarter WAC Defensive Player of the Week. It is the second time that Shewell has won Offensive Player of the Week and the first award for Vagana.
 
Shewell had 23 kills last week and averaged 3.29 kills/set for UVU. She stood out in the sweep of Tarleton with nine kills and a hitting percentage of .571, adding two service aces, two block assists, and three digs. On Saturday, against Abilene Christian, Shewell had 14 kills and nine digs to help UVU come from behind to beat ACU.
 
Vagana recorded eight block assists to lead UVU to 18 blocks against Tarleton last week and averaged 1.86 blocks/set on the week. She is the current WAC leader in blocks/sets at 1.27 and has come on strong down the stretch for UVU. Vagana had one solo block, 12 block assists, and three digs to assist UVU in the sweep.
 
Utah Valley is at home for the final two matches this year. New Mexico State visits Lockhart Arena on Thursday, Nov. 3, before UT Rio Grande Valley comes to Orem for a first-place showdown at 1:00 p.m.
