Shosted ties for 20th, UVU places seventh at WAC Championship

Freshman Leighton Shosted fired a final-round 75 on her way to leading the way for Utah Valley by tying for 20th at the 2022 WAC Women’s Golf Championship with a 16-over 232.

KERRVILLE, Texas – Freshman Leighton Shosted fired a final-round 75 on her way to tying for 20th to lead the way for Utah Valley University at the 2022 WAC Women's Golf Championship at Riverhill Country Club in Kerrville, Texas. As a team, UVU placed seventh at the three-day conference championship event with an 84-over-par 948.
 
After opening Wednesday's final round in 25th place, Shosted saved her best round of her first WAC Championship for last by carding a 3-over 75 on Wednesday to move up five spots and record a top-20 finish. The Wolverine freshman posted a trio of birdies on the day, which included a pair of birdies and seven pars on the front-nine on her way to tying for 20th. Shosted also carded scores of 77 and 80 at the 2022 WAC Championship to finish with a 16-over-par 232. Her final-round 75 marked UVU's best round of the entire tournament. 
 
The 2021 WAC individual champion Victoria Estrada was next for UVU by tying for 37th with a 24-over-par 240. After opening with an 85 on Monday, Estrada responded by carding scores of 76 and 79 over the next two rounds to tie for 37th. Caylyn Ponich finished right behind her by tying for 41st with a 28-over 244. After posting scores of 83 and 82 over the first two rounds, Ponich saved her best round for last by with a 7-over 79 during Wednesday's final round. 
 
Senior Bailey Henley concluded her collegiate career by tying for 45th place with a 31-over 247 (77-80-90), while substitute Lauren Taylor put up an 83 during her lone round of action at the 2022 WAC Championship on Wednesday. Taylor replaced teammate Anna Lesa on Wednesday. Lesa fired scores of 77 and 85 for the Wolverines over the first two rounds.
 
As a team, UVU placed seventh out of nine teams with an 84-over-par 948 (313-319-316). New Mexico State held its lead down the stretch to edge Sam Houston for its seventh WAC title over the past eight years. NM State, who has earned the WAC's automatic bid to compete at an NCAA Regional, won the 2022 WAC Championship with a 34-over 898 (296-301-301) to best Sam Houston by three strokes (901). Seattle U finished in third place at 46-over (910), while Grand Canyon took fourth (915), UT Rio Grande Valley fifth (938), Lamar sixth (946), UVU seventh (948), Stephen F. Austin eighth (967), and Chicago State ninth (1,036). 
 
GCU's Siripatsorn Patchana has also earned an auto bid to compete at an NCAA Regional by claiming medalist honors. Pacchana won the 2022 WAC individual title with a 3-under-par 213 (71-71-71). 
 
The 2022 WAC Championship concludes the 2021-22 campaign for the Wolverines.
