OREM, Utah — Utah Valley University opens the 2022 WAC Softball Tournament on Wednesday at 10 a.m. CT/9 a.m. MT against Lamar University. The Wolverines (22-25) are the No. 5 seed while the Cardinals (11-37) are the No. 8 seed. The tournament is hosted by Sam Houston in Huntsville, Texas and all games will air on ESPN+.
UVU and Lamar are both facing elimination right off the bat with the winner advancing to the double-elimination portion of the tournament and a contest on Wednesday at 4 p.m. CT/3 p.m. MT against No. 4 seed Abilene Christian. The other half of the play-in bracket has No. 6 Sam Houston and No. 7 New Mexico State vying for a chance to play No. 3 Seattle in the final game on Wednesday evening.
Utah Valley is 9-12 all-time in the WAC Tournament with its one championship coming in 2014. The Wolverines have faced Lamar just one time in program history, during the 2016 season with the Cardinals winning that game in Henderson, Nevada. UVU has never played Abilene Christian, Sam Houston, or Stephen F. Austin, the other members of the WAC's Southwest Division.
ABOUT THE WOLVERINES
Utah Valley had two first-team All-WAC selections this year in Madison Carr and Linnah Rebolledo. Carr enters this week leading the WAC and ranking fourth in the country with 75 hits, which is also a Utah Valley record. She also ranks seventh in the nation with a .446 batting average, and on Monday was named the WAC Hitter of the Week. Rebolledo is second on the Wolverines with a .366 average to go along with six home runs, 38 runs batted, 12 stolen bases and a team-high 12 doubles. Mikaela Thomson leads the Wolverines with 12 home runs and 49 runs batted in, both of which rank among the WAC leaders. In the circle, Brooke Carter ranks third in the WAC with 123 strikeouts.
CARR SETS SCHOOL ON-BASE/HITS RECORDS
Madison Carr set a new program records by reaching base in 31 consecutive games, surpassing the old mark of 27, which was held by Lyndsay Steverson. Carr's 28th straight game reaching base came at BYU April 20. She also set a new single-season hits record of 66 hits, held by Rachel Hartgrove. Carr tied the record against BYU on May 4 and set the new mark two days later in her first at-bat against New Mexico State.
