Utah Valley to open 2024 season at Puerto Vallarta Challenge

FORT COLLINS, Colo. — Utah Valley softball will open the 2024 season at the prestigious Puerto Vallarta College Challenge in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico as part of the first of two sessions hosted by Triple Crown Sports at Nancy Almaraz Stadium.

The Wolverines will play four games in three days from Feb. 8-10 against some of the best teams in the nation. Utah Valley will open the season on Feb. 8 against three-time defending national champions Oklahoma before facing off against Iowa State later that afternoon.

The Wolverines will then play single games on Feb. 9 and 10 against perennial powers Washington and Nebraska. All games will be streamed live on FloSoftball.

"We're excited for the opportunity to open the 2024 season at the Puerto Vallarta Challenge," said head coach Cody Thomson. "When we signed up, we knew it would be a challenge, but we're excited to play some very good teams, especially the defending national champs."

This will be the eighth edition of the Puerto Vallarta Challenge, and the second one that Utah Valley has participated in. The Wolverines traveled to Mexico in 2020 and had a successful 3-1 weekend with wins over George Washington, Nevada, and Long Beach State. Redshirt junior Laynee Betancur, the lone Wolverine remaining from that team,  got her first career start that weekend against Oregon and scored her first career run against Nevada.
