OREM, Utah – Lehigh University defeated Utah Valley 9-7 on Friday afternoon at UCCU Ballpark. The Wolverines (8-6) had multi-hit performances from
Trey Cutchen,
Patrick Mills,
Calyn Halvorson,
Matthew Schwarz, and
Cameron Rowe, but could not overcome 21 Lehigh (8-4) hits.
Utah Valley jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first with RBI doubles from
Patrick Mills and
Daniel Dickinson as UVU recorded four hits in the opening frame, three of which were extra-base hits.
Lehigh responded to tie the game in the second on a two-run single from Andrew Nole. UVU did not waste time regaining the lead as Cutchen led off with a single before scoring from first on a double by
Burke Camper. Halvorson extended the lead to 4-2 after a single to score Camper.
In the fourth, Utah Valley added two more runs to take a 6-2 advantage. Schwarz had a base hit to center and advanced to second on a wild pitch. A passed ball later in the inning moved runners to second and third before Rowe singled to score one. UVU snuck a second runner home after Rowe got caught in a rundown, and
Garrett Broussard dashed home.
Lehigh chipped away at the UVU lead scoring one run in the fourth, fifth, sixth, and seventh innings to tie the game at 6-6. Rowe had his second RBI of the game in the bottom of the seventh to give UVU a 7-6 lead. The Mountain Hawks took their first lead of the game in the eighth on a single from Tyler Young at 8-7. They would add an insurance run in the ninth to go up 9-7.
Tyler Thompson (1-0) picked up the win for Lehigh, while
Ethan Fowlks (0-2) suffers the loss.
Logan Gerling picks up a no-decision.
Utah Valley and Lehigh will play a doubleheader tomorrow beginning at 12:05 p.m. MT; the second game will begin 40 minutes after the completion of the first game.
