OREM, Utah – Patrick Mills went 4-for-4 in the second game of Saturday's doubleheader, leading UVU to split with Lehigh. Utah Valley (9-7) bounced back after dropping game one, 12-3, to Lehigh (9-5).
GAME ONE
The Mountain Hawks took a 1-0 lead in the first, and UVU tied it in the fourth with an RBI single from
Nate Bach. In the middle innings, Lehigh took a 5-1 advantage on a fifth-inning homer and sixth-inning triple.
UVU looked to mount a comeback in the seventh as Mills reached on a fielder's choice before
Calyn Halvorson reached on an error to put two runners on base.
Matthew Schwarz cut into the Lehigh lead with a double to left to score Mills and make it 5-2. The Wolverines caught a break on a passed ball that brought home Halvorson to make it 5-3.
Lehigh used a five-run eighth inning to pull away and added two in the ninth for the 12-3 victory.
Burke Camper and Schwarz both had two hits in the game.
Garrett Broussard reached base in two at-bats.
GAME TWO
Lehigh scored three runs in the first inning to jump out to a 3-0 lead.
Colton Kennedy proceeded to retire the next nine hitters he faced, allowing the UVU bats to tie the game in the second inning.
Schwarz led off the inning with a single and then stole second as
Daniel Dickinson drew a walk to bring the tying run to the plate.
Weston Peninger reached on a throwing error and advanced to second. Schwarz and Dickinson both scored on the play to cut the Lehigh lead to 3-2. Mills had his first of four RBIs on a single to right, to even the score at 3-3.
In the fourth, The Wolverines would take the lead after Cutchen singled to start the inning, and Mills hit a moonshot to right for his fourth homer of the year to give UVU a 5-3 lead.
Following a Lehigh RBI single to cut the UVU lead to one, the Wolverines loaded the bases on walks to Dickinson and Peninger.
Cole Jordan singled to left field to load the bases with one out against the Mountain Hawks. Mills came to the plate and picked up his fourth RBI on a walk to extend the lead to 6-4.
Utah Valley pushed the lead to five runs after
Brandon Luna started the inning with a base hit, and Schwarz doubled to left to put two runners in scoring position with one out. Dickinson singled to score Luna, and after a fielding error on the single, Schwarz hustled home to make it 8-4. Jordan added a sac fly to put UVU up 9-4.
Kennedy picked up his first college win in his second start and was backed by solid performances from
Casey Anderson and
Reece Rodabaugh.
Utah Valley closes out the four-game series with Lehigh on Mar. 12 at 12:05 p.m. MT. The Wolverines will host Northwest Nazarene on Mar. 13 at 4:05 p.m. before embarking on WAC play at Seattle U next weekend.
