UVU drops slugfest to BYU in Provo

Provo, Utah – Brigham Young University defeated Utah Valley 15-7 on Tuesday afternoon at Larry H. Miller Field. BYU (7-12) answered every UVU (10-12) lead with runs before pulling away late. Cole Jordan went 4-for-5 while Daniel Dickinson went 3-for-4 to lead UVU offensively.

Utah Valley took a 1-0 lead in the first after BYU hit Daniel Dickinson and Patrick Mills to put two runners on. UVU loaded the bases with a walk to Burke Camper. Calyn Halvorson drove home Dickinson with a hard-hit single to center. The Cougars got the next three hitters to retire the side.

The Wolverines answered with four runs in the second as Cole Jordan singled and stole second base, advancing to third on a throwing error. Lucas Piper singled to score Jordan to tie the game at 2-2.

Dickinson added his second hit of the day on a single to put two runners on base. Camper loaded the bases with a single to left field, and Dickinson scored on a sac fly from Halvorson to give UVU a 3-2 lead. Schwarz lined a ball to right center to bring home two. He was retired trying to extend his double into a triple.

BYU responded with three runs of their own to tie the game at 5-5. The Wolverines scored two in the third to regain the lead after a leadoff double by Trey Cutchen, then Nate Bach hit a laser to center field for his third home run of the season to put UVU in front 7-5.

The Cougars scored one in third, two in the fourth, and one in the fifth to take a 9-7 lead. BYU later added a six-run eighth inning to secure the 15-7 victory.

Jordan is the first Wolverine since Greyson Bogdan to have three doubles in a game. He accomplished this during the 2016 season against Minnesota. Devin Smith threw two innings in relief and did not allow a hit.

Utah Valley returns home for a seven-game home stand with WAC foe Tarleton on Mar. 24 with a 6:05 p.m. MT start. The series continues on Mar. 25 with a 2:05 first pitch and wraps up on Mar. 26 with an 11:05 a.m. start. BYU will make the return trip on Mar. 28.
