Mills' late home run lifts UVU to series win over UTRGV

OREM, Utah – Utah Valley defeated UT Rio Grande Valley 7-4 on Sunday afternoon at UCCU Ballpark. UVU's (19-16, 6-7) Patrick Mills finished 2-for-4 with a three-run go-ahead homer in the eighth to put UVU on top of UTRGV (19-15, 7-8). Utah Valley tied last year's win total of 19 with the victory today.

"This was a great team win with a lot of key performances. Winning a series at home against a team from Texas is a huge deal for our program and something we can really build on," said UVU head coach Eddie Smith.

Trailing 2-0 entering the home half of the fifth inning, the UVU bats came alive to tie the game at 2-2. Burke Camper walked before Cole Jordan hit his third homer of the weekend for his fifth of the season.

UVU starter Casey Anderson finished going 5.0 innings, allowing seven hits and giving up two runs. He held UTRGV scoreless in four innings.

The Wolverines took the lead in the sixth with a two-out rally that began after a single from Mills. He moved to third base on a single from Matthew Schwarz. After a stolen base by Schwarz, Camper knocked both runs home to go up 4-2.

UTRGV tied the game at 4-4 after a two-run home run from Brandon Pimentel. It didn't take long for UVU to answer back, singles from Daniel Dickinson and Calyn Halvorson put two runners on base for the three-run blast from Mills to give UVU the lead.

Nick Sims went 2.1 innings for the Wolverines, giving up three hits and two runs. Devin Smith (1-1) got the win going 0.2 innings. He came in relief of Sims and finished the eighth inning. Mitch Mueller earned his first save of the season, tossing a scoreless ninth.

Three Wolverines finished with multi-RBI games with Camper, Jordan, and Mills. Dickinson moved his reached-base streak to 23 games.

Utah Valley is back in action on Apr. 17 with a non-conference matchup against Utah Tech in the Old Hammer Rivalry. It will mark the first of four meetings with the Trailblazers, and UVU visits St. George at the end of the month.
