OREM, Utah – Utah Valley won the finale of a three-game series against Grand Canyon on Sunday afternoon at UCCU Ballpark.
Casey Anderson pitched five hitless innings for UVU (15-12, 3-4), quieting the GCU (17-10, 8-4) bats.
Luke Iverson was 2-for-4 with two triples and three runs scored, and
Cole Jordan was 3-for-4 with a pair of doubles.
"Our focus today was on enjoying the opportunity to compete and battle. It was a great team effort to battle until the very end and come out on top," said UVU head coach
Eddie Smith.
Grand Canyon jumped out to a four-run first-inning lead. Utah Valley got a run back in the bottom of the second after a leadoff triple by Iverson and a sac fly from
Burke Camper to make it 4-1 Lopes.
The Utah Valley bats came alive in the third inning, which started with back-to-back one-out doubles from
Daniel Dickinson and
Garrett Broussard to make it 4-2 Lopes. Later in the inning, with runners on the corners, UVU cashed in with the second triple by Iverson to bring home two runs and tie the game at four. The Wolverines took a 5-4 lead when Camper reached on an error allowing Iverson to score.
Cole Jordan led off with a double in the bottom of the fourth inning before advancing to third base on a foul out. He scored on a single by Dickinson to give UVU a 6-4 advantage.
Grand Canyon came back to score three runs in the fifth inning.
Nick Sims went 4.0 innings for UVU in relief, giving up four hits in the game.
The Wolverines answered quickly in the bottom of the fifth inning. Iverson drew a one-out walk and moved to second on a ground out. He came around to score on a single from
Trey Cutchen, tied the game at seven.
A second four-run inning in the seventh put UVU up 11-7. Camper and Cutchen reached on a walk before a bunt single from Jordan loaded the bases.
Brandon Luna broke the tie with a double down to right field to score two. A GCU wild pitch brought another run home from third base, and a single from Broussard capped the scoring in the inning.
Casey Anderson (1-0) picked up his first win of the season, with only two runners reached, one on a walk in the eighth and a hit batter in the ninth. He struck out four Lopes on the afternoon.
Iverson tied the school record for triples in a game with two. He now has five on the season and is in second place in the UVU record books for triples in a season.
Utah Valley travels to Sacramento State for a three-game series against the Hornets beginning on Apr. 6. After the series, UVU will play the next six games in Utah. The Wolverines will travel to Utah on Apr. 10 before hosting the Utes on Apr. 11. UTRGV and Utah Tech follow to wrap up the homestand.
