SACRAMENTO – Trey Cutchen and
Daniel Dickinson hit ninth-inning homers as Utah Valley's comeback attempt fell short on Friday night at John Smith Field. Sacramento State (15-14, 4-6) used five home runs, with two coming from JP Smith, to defeat UVU (15-14, 3-5).
Trailing 7-0 heading into the ninth, the Wolverine bats came alive.
Burke Camper led off with a walk before Cutchen hit his first homer of the year over the right-field fence to make it 7-2.
Garrett Broussard reached on an error, and
Nate Bach hit a one-out double to put runners on second and third. Dickinson hit his third blast of the season to make it 7-5. UVU was down to their final out when the Hornet closer Jack Zalasky walked
Matthew Schwarz, hit
Luke Iverson, and walked Camper, his second of the inning. Cutchen, hitting for the second time in the inning, hit a blast that appeared to be a grand slam, but it went foul, preventing UVU from taking the lead.
The Hornets scored in the first inning to up 1-0 before hitting homers in the second, third, and fifth innings to hold a 5-0 lead. Utah Valley's Dickinson and Camper had singles in the first and second innings before being stranded.
UVU had baserunners in the fourth and fifth against Sac State starter Jasper Nelson. Camper and Cutchen reached in the fourth on singles. In the fifth,
Nate Bach and
Patrick Mills were aboard, and Nelson came up with the outs needed to end the threats.
Nelson (2-2) gets credit for the win after going six solid innings for the Hornets.
Jayse Burkett (2-3) took the loss after throwing five innings, allowing five hits and five strikeouts. Freshman
Colton Kennedy finished the game going three innings of three-hit ball.
Dickinson finished 3-for-5 in the ballgame with three RBIs, as Cutchen and Camper finished with a multi-hit game.
The Wolverines and Hornets will play game two of the series on Apr. 7, from John Smith Field in Sacramento. The first pitch is scheduled for 7:00 p.m. MT.
