HUNTSVILLE, Texas – Utah Valley pitchers
Casey Anderson and
Nick Sims held Sam Houston to seven hits and one run to come out on top, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Don Sanders Stadium. UVU (22-16, 8-8) won their second consecutive WAC series and first-ever series with Sam Houston (23-18, 15-7). The Wolverines recorded seven walks in the game, including a bases-loaded walk to
Garrett Broussard that proved to be the game-winning run.
"It was a great weekend for our program. It was a perfect college baseball environment with a large fan base and spectacular game day operation. We played solid baseball all weekend and came out with a series win. Weekends like these are what we do it for!," said UVU head coach
Eddie Smith.
Tied at 1-1 entering the top of the eighth, Utah Valley broke through, scoring the game-winning run on a walk to
Garrett Broussard. UVU drew three walks in the eighth inning, and
Patrick Mills doubled down the right field line to put the leading run in scoring position. After two strikeouts,
Lucas Piper drew a walk with a full count. The runners moved up on a wild pitch before Halvorson drew a walk to load the bases.
Justin Wishkoski scored in the first inning to put Sam Houston up 1-0. The run was unearned against Anderson after an error extended the inning, and it was the only run allowed by the UVU staff on the day.
In the third,
Daniel Dickinson walked before moving to second on a pickoff attempt that went down the line, allowing Dickinson to move to third base.
Patrick Mills tied the game at 1-1 after a groundout. The Wolverines looked to add runs after back-to-back walks to
Matthew Schwarz and
Burke Camper, but the Bearkats came up with the out needed to end the threat.
Sam Houston looked to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with a pair of two-out singles that put two runners on base. Anderson got WAC Preseason Co-Player of the Year, Carlos Contreras, to fly out to end the threat.
Anderson finished the game, tossing 6.0 innings, allowing six scattered hits and no earned runs against one of the best lineups in the WAC.
Utah Valley looked to take the lead in the seventh inning.
Garrett Broussard hit a one-out single before Dickinson singled with two outs to place runners at the corners. UVU did not get the run home in the seventh but kept the pressure on the Sam Houston staff and defense.
Nick Sims (2-0) picks up the win after throwing 3.0 innings, allowing one hit. Sam Houston reliever Braden Davis (3-3) was credited with the loss.
Dickinson finished 2-for-4 on the day, and Mills was 2-for-5 with a double. Broussard reached base three times, going 1-for-2 with two walks.
Utah Valley will return home for a game on Wednesday, Apr. 26, against Pac-12 foe Washington State before returning to WAC play next weekend at Utah Tech. The Wolverines and Trailblazers played on Apr. 17, as UVU came out on top 8-6.
