ST. GEORGE, Utah – Utah Valley baseball dropped the opening game of a three-game WAC series 13-8 to Utah Tech on Friday night at Bruce Hurst Field. Utah Tech (10-31, 5-14) scored early and pulled away from Utah Valley (22-19, 8-9). The two teams combined for ten home runs in the game.
Burke Camper was 3-for-4 with his first career UVU homer, and
Cole Jordan finished 3-for-4 with a big fly.
"We did not play well enough in any facet to win the ballgame. I look forward to coming back out tomorrow to compete with our team," said UVU head coach
Eddie Smith.
Jordan hit his sixth homer of the season in the top of the second inning to put UVU on the board following a three-spot in the first for Utah Tech. He finished a single shy of the cycle for the Wolverines.
Utah Valley scored two in the third after a leadoff double down the left-field line by
Brandon Luna. He advanced to third on a groundout and scored on a single by Mills to make it 6-2. The Wolverines added a run on a double to left field by Camper that allowed Mills to score from first. Utah Tech led 8-3 after scoring two runs in the bottom of the third.
Luke Iverson led off the fourth inning with an inside-the-park homer. He is the first since Mark Krueger hit one against UTPA on May. 22, 2014. The Wolverines chipped away at the Trailblazer lead scoring two more in the fifth, the first on a solo home run from Schwarz and later scoring on back-to-back doubles from Camper and Jordan.
Utah Tech held UVU scoreless until the eighth when Camper homered for the first time in his UVU career to make it 13-7. Jordan tripled to right and then scored a groundout.
Chase Hennessey went 3.0 strong innings for UVU tonight, allowing two hits, and did not allow a run.
The Wolverines and Trailblazers play again tomorrow at 2:05 p.m. MT from Bruce Hurst Field in St. George. The series wraps up on Apr. 30 with a 12:05 p.m. MT start.
