OREM, Utah – Utah Valley tied the school record for the most runs scored in a game after a 25-13 victory over New Mexico State on Friday night at UCCU Ballpark. UVU (26-21) had seven players with multiple hits against the NMSU (12-32, 9-19) staff. Eight of the 17 hits for UVU were extra-base hits.
"It was a great effort today for our team in unique conditions. We really attacked the game from the start. Early on, we had to resist a surge by New Mexico State but just kept winning pitches to come out on top," said UVU head coach
Eddie Smith.
UVU built off the momentum of starting pitcher
Logan Gerling, who struck out the side in the first inning before scoring four runs in the bottom of the first, capped with an RBI single from
Patrick Mills, and a three-run line drive home run to center field by
Calyn Halvorson to put UVU up 4-0.
Utah Valley responded to the one run scored by the Aggies with two of their own.
Brandon Luna doubled to start the second inning before scoring on a
Daniel Dickinson double to make it 5-1.
Cole Jordan made it 6-1 UVU with an RBI single.
New Mexico State took a brief 7-6 lead in the top of the third. Luna hit his fourth homer of the year, a three-run blast to make it 9-7. The Wolverines hit a second homer in the inning after Dickinson doubled and Jordan was hit by a pitch. Mills hit his team-high ninth big fly with that bounced off the road and almost hit University Parkway to put UVU up 12-7.
The offensive explosion was not done yet, as UVU put up a nine spot in the fourth inning. Jordan singled through the left side to plate one and put the Wolverines in front 13-8. Utah Valley added more after Camper was hit with the bases full, and Halvorson had a two-run double making it 16-8.
Matthew Schwarz singled after Broussard was hit by a pitch to make it 18-8. Dickinson doubled to left field to clear the bases and make it 21-8 UVU.
After a four-run surge by the Aggies, Utah Valley responded with four more. Broussard, Schwarz, and Dickinson all doubled home runs to put UVU in front 25-12.
The last time UVU scored 25 runs in a game was on Mar. 25, 2005, against Southern Utah. All starting nine reached base in tonight's contest. Dickinson had four hits, Schwarz had three, while Jordan, Mills, Halvorson, Broussard, and Luna all finished with two.
Utah Valley and New Mexico State will play the second game tomorrow at 12:05 p.m. MT. The game was moved up from the 2:05 p.m. MT start due to impending inclement weather in Orem. The series wraps up on Sunday, May 14, at 12:05 p.m. MT.
