OREM, Utah – Four-time NCAA qualifier and 2021 All-American
Demetrius Romero will stick around Orem and continue training at the Brunson Utah Valley Regional Training Center.
"Demetrius has been a huge part of our program, becoming an all-American and two-time Big 12 Champion while he was a student-athlete for us. We are pumped to have him staying in our room while competing for the Brunson UVRTC and look forward to him creating more history in his freestyle wrestling career," said UVU associate head coach Ethan Lofthouse.
Romero was a transfer from Boise State and saw great success during his time in Orem. He qualified for the NCAA Tournament during his first year at UVU after going 26-9 overall and 11-0 in duals.
During 2018-2019, he put his name in the record books as UVU's first Big 12 Champion winning the title at 165 with a 3-0 record. At his second NCAA Championships, he reached the round of 12 and was one win short of earning All-American honors.
After a medical redshirt season and a move up to 174 pounds, he once again found himself at the podium at the Big 12 Championship going 4-0 to claim his second Big 12 title. His 16-0 overall record earned him the No. 2 seed, the highest seed in school history. He finished sixth after advancing to the semifinals to become the third UVU wrestler to go to the semifinals and finished 19-2 overall on the season.
This past year, Romero finished 17-5 on the season and finished fourth at the 2022 Big 12 Championships. He earned the No. 15 seed in the field and came up one victory short of earning his second All-American honor. In his career, he won 97 matches to place him second in school history.
Lofthouse said, "This is the next step for our program moving forward. To have our alumni continue to train in the RTC after their collegiate careers with goals of World and Olympic titles while offering that mentorship and expertise to current athletes is priceless".
The Brunson Utah Valley Regional Training Center is here to help wrestlers of all age groups and skill levels grow in wrestling training by hosting camps and clinics. The Regional Training Center helps wrestlers train and prepare for Olympic and World Championship competitions.
