OREM, Utah – Utah Valley University wrestling fell on Saturday afternoon to California Baptist University, 20-17. CBU (7-10, 2-6) and UVU (2-7, 1-7) split the dual's ten matches with bonus points putting the Lancers over the top. No. 14
Evan Bockman and No. 29
Haiden Drury picked up wins for the Wolverines.
"It was a special day as we had eight seniors recognized for their tremendous efforts and contributions as student-athletes to the program and university. It would have been nice to celebrate the last dual of the season and their careers with a win, but we didn't compete well enough to earn that today. We will now turn our focus toward post-season and getting the starters prepared for hopefully their best performances of the year," said UVU head coach
Greg Williams.
California Baptist's Chaz Hallmark opened the dual with a 6-3 victory in sudden victory with a takedown.
Jaxon Garoutte got UVU on the board with a 9-5 decision after trailing 3-0 at the end of the first period. He responded with a seven-point second period to flip the lead in his favor, 7-4 heading to the third period. He put the match out of reach on a reversal to go up 9-5.
Caleb Uhlenhopp earned his first dual victory of the season with a 2-1 decision at 174 coming from behind trailing 1-0 heading to the third period. He spun the bout in his favor with a reversal that won him the match and picked up a riding time point to put UVU in front 6-3 before the first break.
The Lancers regained the lead at 184 with a victory by Nathan Haas before No. 14
Evan Bockman recorded four takedowns and one near fall while picking up a 17-2 technical fall and moved to 16-5 overall with an 8-1 record in dual matches this year. The win put the Wolverines back in front 11-7 in the dual.
Chase Trussell broke a scoreless bout with an escape in the second period to go up 1-0. Chris Island tied the bout up early in the third period with an escape. The two would take the match to sudden victory, where Trussell secured the win with a takedown with 18 seconds left in the period.
The Wolverines led 14-7 before No. 32 Elijah Griffin picked up a major decision to cut into the UVU lead at 14-11, and Hunter Leake's pin put CBU up 17-14.
No. 29 Drury tied the dual up at 17-17 after a 3-1 decision at 141. He went 1-0 with a penalty point due to stalling. Darren Green was able to tie the bout up with an escape in the second period before the match flipped in UVU's favor with an escape and a second penalty point for stalling.
The dual came down to the day's final match as Dayne Morton held on for a 7-6 decision over
Isaiah Delgado. The UVU senior trailed 3-1 in the second period before scoring on an escape and a penalty point to make it 3-3. After Morton had taken a 7-3 lead early in the third period, Delgado fought back and cut the lead to 7-5 with a reversal before adding a penalty point for the 7-6 loss.
During the second break, UVU honored UVU head coach
Greg Williams and awarded him the Michael V. Jacobsen Bronze Wolverine Award for lifetime achievement. Today's dual was his final home match.
Utah Valley will next compete at the Big 12 Championships on Mar. 9-10 at the BOK Center in Tulsa, Okla. The NCAA will announce allocations for the 2024 NCAA Championships next week. NCAA's will be Mar. 21-23 at the T-Mobile Center in Kansas City, Mo.
