SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Utah Valley baseball fell 10-3 in the final game of the three-game series to Sacramento State.
Matthew Schwarz finished 2-for-4 with 2 RBIs in the contest to lead UVU (4-10, 1-2). Sacramento State (7-8, 2-1) recorded 16 hits in the victory.
The Wolverines put a runner in scoring position in the top of the first inning after a double by
Calyn Halvorson before stranding the running at second base. The Hornets used back-to-back doubles from JP Smith and Cesar Valero to take a 1-0 lead after one inning.
Sacramento State added four more in the second inning to take a 5-0 lead early in the contest. Utah Valley threatened again in the fourth, starting with a Schwarz single through the left side, and advanced to second when
Nate Bach reached on a fielding error.
Cole Jordan was hit by a pitch to load the bases for UVU. The Hornets staff retired the next two hitters to keep the Wolverines off the board.
Utah Valley cut into the Hornets' lead in the fifth inning, when
Burke Camper had a lead-off double down the left field line. He later scored on a sac fly from Schwarz to make it 6-1 Sacramento State.
With two outs in the sixth, UVU once again looked to chip into their deficit.
Garrett Broussard reached on a single through the left side, and
Daniel Dickinson was aided by an error before Camper singled to left field to bring home one and make it 6-2.
The Hornets tacked on four runs late to take a 10-2 lead into the ninth inning. Schwarz had his second RBI of the contest, with a double to left center to make it 10-3.
Camper, Broussard, and Schwarz all finished with two hits in the game.
Nick Sims went 3.0 innings in relief with two hits and four strikeouts for the Wolverines.
Utah Valley will play a pair of non-conference games this week in Northern California. They meet UC Davis on Mar. 11 at 3:30 p.m. MT before playing at Pacific on Mar .12 at 1:00 p.m. MT.
