Box Score DAVIS, Calif. – Utah Valley baseball lost on Monday afternoon 8-7 to UC Davis at Phil Swimley Field at Dobbins Stadium.
Nate Bach finished with four RBIs, including a three-run eighth-inning homer to put the Wolverines (4-11, 1-2) in front before the Aggies (9-7) rallied for the win in the bottom of the ninth.
The Wolverines scored two runs in the top of the first inning by loading the bases after a
Daniel Dickinson walk,
Burke Camper's infield single, and
Calyn Halvorson being hit by a pitch. They got on the board with a two-run double off the bat of
Garrett Broussard to take a 2-0 lead.
Jackson Thomas started the mound for Utah Valley and allowed a first-inning run before settling in and sending the Aggies down in order during the second. The UVU bats looked to do damage in the top of the third after singles by
Cole Jordan and
Jayden Smith put a pair of runners on the base. They moved into scoring position on a groundout to the pitcher, but a flyout ended the UVU threat.
After UC Davis tied the game with a run in the third, Utah Valley regained the lead at 3-2 after Halvorson was hit for the second time in the game and advanced to second on a balk. Bach had his first RBI of the game with a two-out single through the left side to score Halvorson and make it 3-2.
UVU added to their lead in the fifth inning when Smith led off with a single to left field. He recorded his second stolen base this season to move into scoring position for Dickinson, who knocked him home with a single to left to put the Wolverines in front 4-2.
Reece Rodabaugh pitched 2.1 innings with three strikeouts, retiring the first six Aggies he faced. In the sixth, UC Davis took its first lead by putting up a four-spot to go up 6-4. UVU went to the bullpen with
Jacob Beltran, who pitched the next 2.2 innings on two hits and three strikeouts and did not allow a run.
The Wolverines took advantage of control problems from the UC Davis staff in the eighth when a pitch hit Camper and Broussard to put two runners on base. Bach gave UVU a late 7-6 lead with a three-run homer to left field. They looked to add insurance in the ninth with singles from
Matt Olive, and Lovings put two runners on with no outs. The bases were loaded a couple of hitters later when a pitch hit Halvorson, but a groundout ended the threat.
The Aggies got two men on early in the ninth when a batter was hit, and a fielding error before on a sac bunt moved two runners into scoring position. A single to left field by Alex Gouveia scored two runs for the walk-off win by UC Davis.
Sal Batres (2-1) picked up the win for the Aggies, while UVU's
Ethan Brodsky (0-2) was tagged with the loss.
The Wolverines wrap up the road trip on Tuesday, Mar. 12, with a 1:00 p.m. MT game with Pacific in Stockton. They return home this weekend for a three-game WAC series with Stephen F. Austin starting on Friday, Mar. 15 at 4:05 p.m. MT.
