Four homers lift Utah Valley over SFA

OREM, Utah -  Utah Valley University picked up a 7-5 win on Saturday afternoon over Stephen F. Austin at UCCU Ballpark. UVU (6-12, 3-2) hit four homers on the day and tallied eight extra base hits. Mitch Mueller finished with 4.0 innings in relief, limiting SFA (3-18, 0-5) to just two hits.

Stephen F. Austin scored four runs in the top of the first inning to take a 4-0 lead. UVU answered back in the home half of the second inning as Luke Iverson recorded his first of two hits on the day with a double to left field and scored on Garrett Broussard's first homer of the year to cut the lead to 4-2.

The Wolverines added in the inning that started with a double by Jayden Smith before Isaac Lovings had his first RBI of the game with a single to left field to score Smith and make it 4-3 SFA.  UVU held the Jacks scoreless in the third inning before taking their first lead of the contest.

Burke Camper led off the third inning with a walk, putting the tying run on base for UVU. Iverson gave the Wolverines the 5-4 lead with his first home run of the year. Utah Valley made it 6-4 in the fourth when Nate Bach homered for the second straight day when a 2-0 pitch left the yard. They looked to add more runs in the inning after Daniel Dickinson reached on a bunt single, and he moved to third base on a ground-rule double by Camper. The Wolverines stranded both runners to end the inning.

Ethan Fowlks bounced back after the first inning to claim his third win of the year. He finished with 5.0 innings on nine hits and three strikeouts.

Mueller came in with a 6-5 lead in the sixth inning, and SFA put two runners in scoring position with one out and threatened to take the lead. He then struck out Peyton Parker and got Cole Hill to ground out to hold the 6-5 lead. It was the Wolverines who scored in the sixth when Lovings hit his sixth homer of the season on the first pitch of the inning, putting Utah Valley up 7-5.

Iverson, Lovings, and Bach all had two hits in the game for Utah Valley. The Wolverines have tallied 15 extra-base hits in the series, eight home runs, six doubles, and a triple.

The Wolverines will go for the sweep tomorrow against SFA, with the first pitch scheduled for 12:05 p.m. MT from UCCU Ballpark. UVU will then head south to play a two-game midweek series at Arizona State on Mar. 19-20. They will return home for a three-game series against Bushnell on Mar. 22-23.
