RIVERSIDE, Calif. – Utah Valley defeated California Baptist University, 15-9 on Saturday night at Totman Stadium. UVU (20-21, 12-8) capitalized on 14 walks and six hit batters on the night.
Luke Iverson went 2-for-3 with a career-high five RBIs, while
Mitch Mueller held CBU (28-15, 14-6) scoreless for five innings and improved to 4-1 this season.
"That was a great team win tonight. We got a great start on the mound from
Mitch Mueller and then had a solid night offensively. It was great to see the team compete with toughness and execute at a high level," said UVU head coach
Eddie Smith.
The Wolverines loaded the bases in the first inning after
Daniel Dickinson and
Burke Camper reached on a walk and hit by a pitch before
Calyn Halvorson walked.
Luke Iverson followed up his two-hit game last night with a triple to right center field that cleared the bases to make it 3-0.
After UVU starter
Mitch Mueller did not allow a run in the bottom of the first, the UVU bats added on after back-to-back singles from
Matthew Schwarz and Dickinson before Camper drew a walk on a full count to load the bases. The Wolverines went up 4-0 after a sacrifice fly from
Cole Jordan and later 5-0 on an RBI single from
Nate Bach.
Calyn Halvorson launched a home run to right field to put UVU in front 8-0 in the second.
Utah Valley took a commanding 10-0 lead in the fourth inning after they loaded the bases with walks to Camper and Jordan, with Halvorson being hit by a pitch. Iverson came up with his second extra-base hit of the game with a double that brought home two runs.

He was one punchout away from his career-high of nine, which he achieved last season against UC Riverside and Seattle U. With the win in the ballgame, Mueller moved to 4-1, while the UVU offense handed CBU's Brandon Downer the loss.
The Lancer offense got on the board with two runs in the fifth inning and they added one in the sixth.

th appearance and pitched a clean inning in the top of the seventh before the Wolverine bats went on the attack.
UVU's first three hitters reached on a pair of walks and a hit batter. They cashed in the eighth inning with a groundout by
Isaac Lovings to make it 12-3. The clutch hits came after an intentional walk to Dickinson, loaded the bases for the second time in the inning. Camper delivered a two-run single in the middle to put Utah Valley in front 14-3 before Jordan singled to the right-center field gap and capped the scoring at 15-3.
California Baptist did not go quietly, scoring six runs in the eighth inning and climbed back into the game at 15-9. In the ninth, Utah Valley loaded the bases before Mitchel Simon robbed Dickinson of extra bases and the Wolverines of a couple of runs to keep the game at a six-run difference.
Ethan Brodsky made his second appearance of the series and gave up a leadoff double before retiring the next three hitters on a foul out, ground out and strike out to end the game and even the series.
Dickinson and Camper each walked three times tonight, while five Wolverines had multi-RBI games, and four scored multi-runs in the game.
UVU and CBU will conclude the series tomorrow afternoon with a 1:00 p.m. MT start. The Wolverines will then head to Saint George, Utah, for a game on Apr. 29 at 4:05 p.m. MT against Utah Tech; it will be the fourth time the two have met this season, with Utah Valley holding a 3-0 advantage.
