Wolverines tie season-high mark with four homers in loss to BYU

OREM, Utah – Utah Valley baseball dropped a Monday night contest to Brigham Young University, 15-7, at UCCU Ballpark. UVU (25-16) tied a season-high with four home runs, with shots coming from Luke Iverson, Mason Strong, Landon Frei, and Cougar Cooke. BYU (20-18) was led by Chipper Beck, who finished with two home runs and four RBIs in the win.

The Wolverines answered BYU's first two-run inning with a two-run inning of their own, which started when Iverson homered on the first pitch he saw for his 11th home run of the season to make it 2-1. Utah Valley tied the game later in the inning with two runners on base; BYU tried to back-pick the runner at first, and the ball sailed into right field. Landon Frei knocked in Jimmy De Anda to tie the game up at 2-2.

BYU tallied eight runs over the next two innings to take a 10-2 lead. The Wolverines were held scoreless, but freshman Sawyer Wickstrom came and tossed a career-high two innings and helped put up the first zero of the night by retiring Beck and Ryder Robinson before continuing on for his second inning of work, where he retired the Cougars in order.

Utah Valley chipped away at the BYU lead in the bottom of the fifth inning with a one-out homer from Frei for his 13th of the season, which moved him into a tie for ninth all-time on the single-season home run list with Isaac Lovings, Jace Brinkerhoff, and Dan Bulow.

Luke Kimmel came in and pitched the sixth and recorded a strikeout before finishing up a 1-2-3 inning to give the Wolverines offense a greater chance to cut into the lead in the bottom of the sixth, which they quickly did, starting with a leadoff walk from De Anda before Strong homered to left field to make it 10-5 BYU.

The Wolverines had two doubles in the contest, both coming from Massey, who finished 2-for-3 with an RBI in the seventh inning to score Jayden Smith, who reached base three times in the game. He added a stolen base in the seventh to get into scoring position.

In the ninth, Utah Valley's Cooke hit a pinch-hit home run over the right center field fence, it's Cooke's second career homer and first of the season.

Iverson was hit for the 22nd time this season in the game, which broke Smith's 2024 record for the most times being hit by a pitch in a single season.
