PROVO, Utah — The Utah Valley University hurdlers had a big day with
Kali McEuen's school-record performance in the 400-meter hurdles leading the way on the opening day of the BYU Robison Invitational. The Wolverines had eight personal records that caused movement in the top 10, with five coming in the hurdles.
McEuen won the 400mH in 57.82 to set the new program record with
Ella Hopper's PR of 58.54 seconds good enough for both second in Wednesday's race and in the school's top 10.
Whitney Fisher also recorded a PR in 1:01.51 which puts her ninth in the record book
McEuen also had a PR in the 100-meter hurdles, where she finished as the runner-up to school-record holder
Quincy Bonds in the prelims. McEuen is now No. 2 in the top 10 in the event after finishing Wednesday's race in 13.67 seconds. Bonds had the top time in the prelims and will be joined by McEuen in Thursday's final.
Brayden Walker recorded the No. 7 mark in the men's 400-meter hurdles. His time of 52.83 seconds put him fifth in the race.
The Wolverines also had a strong showing in the 5,000-meter races, with
Caila Odekirk winning the women's race and
Mo Guled finishing as the runner-up. Both runners were just off their personal records, while
Abdulsalam Farah and
Anna Martin both set new personal bests in the 5k that lands them both at No. 6 in the record book.
Also posting a PR that moved him into the No. 7 spot in the hammer record book was
Luis Diaz Bojorquez, who took third on Wednesday. Eddie Garcia hit 51.10 meters in the hammer and finished fifth. On the women's side,
Elyssa Shaw had a season-best 54.09 to finish third and was just shy of her PR of 54.29 meters, which ranks fourth.
The Robison Invite continues on Thursday with the women's 10k — no Wolverines are among the expected participants — at 9:30 a.m.
Mason Braithwaite is slated to run in the men's 10k that begins at 9:15 a.m.
Also on Thursday will be a contingent of Wolverines competing at the SUU Coliseum Championships. That meet gets underway at 3 p.m. in Cedar City.
