Box Score SAN FRANCISCO – Utah Valley baseball suffered a heartbreaking late-inning 6-5 loss to San Francisco on Friday afternoon. UVU (28-27) got home runs from Landon Frei and Dominic Longo II before USF (26-28) rallied late with four runs in the eighth inning.

Wolverine starter Aaron Rice worked through a bases-loaded no-out jam in the second inning. After loading the bases, the Dons hit into a liner to CJ Colyer at first base before a flyball was lifted to Luke Iverson in right and gunned down Patrick Keighran to keep the game scoreless.

The Dons broke through in the home half of the third with a two-run shot to left field by shortstop TJ Rogers to give USF a 2-0 lead. The lead did not last long as UVU quickly responded with a one-out single by Mason Strong before Longo II homered down the left field line to even the score at 2-2. UVU continued to put pressure on after Colyer walked and added a stolen base, and Joseph Barnhardt walked to put two runners on base. They were both in scoring position after a balk, but the Wolverines did not bring them home.

Garrett Miller relieved Rice in the bottom of the fourth and retired San Francisco in order on 12 pitches, including a strikeout to begin the appearance. The quick inning allowed Utah Valley to get right back up and get runners in scoring position after Luke Iverson and Jayden Smith each worked walks with full counts before Frei hit his 16th homer of the year to put UVU up 5-2. He is now at 70 RBIs this season which moves him into fourth place all-time for a single season and the most since Goose Kallunki had 86 in 2012.

Colton Kennedy made his second relief appearance of the season, finished 3 1/3 innings pitched, and worked through a couple of jams. In the sixth inning, the Dons brought the tying run to the plate before the UVU junior forced a ground out and a strikeout to end the inning before sending USF down in order in the seventh inning. They rallied in the bottom of the eighth inning, starting with back-to-back home runs to make it 5-4, before they hit their third homer of the inning to go up 6-5.
