STOCKTON, Calif. – Utah Valley University fell 3-2 in 10 innings Sunday in the series finale against the University of the Pacific. UVU (2-2) received a superb outing from sophomore
Landon Zaborowski, who tossed six innings of two-hit ball while striking out eight, but the Tigers' (2-2) Levi Sotomayor spoiled the game in the 10th with a double down the right-field line for a walk-off hit.
Zaborowski finished one strikeout shy of his career high of nine, set last season against Seattle U in March. He grew stronger as the game progressed, striking out four of five consecutive hitters during one stretch. Six of his eight strikeouts came the second time or later through the Tigers' order.
Jayden Smith finished with two hits, including a double, for the Wolverines. He was joined by
Mason Hamlin's two-hit performance, highlighted by a triple to left field. The pair accounted for two of Utah Valley's three extra-base hits, with
Kaden Carpenter adding the third on his first home run in a Wolverine uniform on the second pitch of the game to give UVU a 1-0 lead.
The Wolverines extended their lead to 2-0 in the fourth inning when
Hunter Katschke drew a leadoff walk and advanced to second on a single by
Trenton Rowan. UVU used small ball to move both runners into scoring position when
Chipper Beck laid down a bunt before
Brody Block drove in a run with a liner that glanced off the glove of Pacific's second baseman into right field.
Pacific answered in the seventh after Utah Valley went to the bullpen. The Tigers loaded the bases and tied the game on a walk and a wild pitch. Pacific threatened for more, but
George Albrecht recorded a strikeout before
Aaron Rice induced JT Shank to fly out to end the inning and keep the game tied at 2.
Both teams had chances in the eighth and ninth innings. Beck reached after being hit by a pitch and stole second in the eighth, then helped prevent Pacific from taking the lead when he fielded Sotomayor's grounder up the middle and threw to first for the out.
In the ninth,
Derek Houston led off with a single and later advanced to third on a passed ball and a groundout. Carson Revay struck out
Mason Strong to escape the threat.
Carter Seely followed with a scoreless inning in his second appearance of the season, allowing a leadoff single before inducing three straight groundouts.
The Tigers were down to their final out in the bottom of the 10th after
Josh Mawhinney retired the first two hitters of his collegiate career on groundouts. Grant McArthur then worked a two-out walk before Sotomayor doubled to the wall in right field, allowing McArthur to score from first.
