RENO, Nev. — Utah Valley dropped both ends of a Saturday doubleheader to Nevada at Don Weir Field at Peccole Park. UVU (2-4) got two-hit games from
Luke Iverson,
Kaden Carpenter, and
Chipper Beck in a 7-4 loss in Game 1, with
Bradley Gilbert tossing three shutout innings in relief.
Mason Hamlin went 4-for-5 with two RBIs in Game 2, while Carpenter and
Hunter Katschke added two hits apiece in a 9-5 loss in the nightcap.
GAME 1
Utah Valley got on the board in the top of the third when Iverson reached on an infield single, and Hamlin followed with a single to put two runners on. Utah transfer Carpenter doubled to center to make it 1-0.
Nevada answered with five runs over the next two innings to take a 5-1 lead.
Gilbert relieved UVU starter
Colton Kennedy and held the Wolf Pack scoreless for the next four innings. He retired the first six hitters he faced and escaped potential damage in the seventh with a runner in scoring position. Nevada added two insurance runs in the eighth to extend the lead to 7-1.
The Wolverines threatened late, putting their first two hitters on base when
Mason Strong singled to short, and Beck singled up the middle.
DJ Massey followed with his first RBI of the season on a single through the right side.
Down to their final out and trailing 7-2, Iverson doubled to deep center to score
Derek Houston and Massey and cut the deficit to 7-4, but Nevada held on for the win.
GAME 2
Utah Valley scored in each of the first three innings. Iverson opened the game with a four-pitch walk and advanced to second on a balk before Hamlin doubled to right-center to make it 1-0.
In the second inning,
Hunter Katschke and
Trenton Rowan stood on the corners with one out and executed a double steal to give the Wolverines a 2-0 lead. Utah Valley added two more in the third when Hamlin scored from first on Carpenter's double and Rowan followed with an RBI single to make it 4-0.
Starter
Jacob Heppner tossed four solid innings, allowing just one hit and one walk through the first four frames. Nevada broke through in the fifth, forcing Heppner out after one run and scoring two more to trim the lead to 4-3. Utah Valley extended its advantage to 5-3 on Hamlin's first home run of the season. He is off to a 10-for-20 start for the Wolverines.
Nevada responded with three runs in the seventh to take a 6-5 lead. UVU threatened in the eighth when Rowan walked and stole second with two outs but was left stranded.
The Wolf Pack secured the doubleheader sweep by scoring three runs in the bottom of the eighth.

Utah Valley will play the series finale at Nevada on Sunday. First pitch is scheduled for noon MT (11 a.m. PT). The Wolverines return home next weekend to host future Big West foe UC Riverside. The four-game series begins Friday, Feb. 27, at 4:05 p.m. MT at UCCU Ballpark.
