GOODYEAR, Ariz. — Utah Valley sophomore Paxton Maxwell sits atop the leaderboard after firing a 7-under-par 65 in Sunday's opening round of the Loyola Intercollegiate at Palm Valley Golf Club in Goodyear, Arizona. The 65 marks the second-lowest single-round score in Utah Valley men's golf program history.
Maxwell holds a one-stroke lead over Grand Canyon's Campbell Kerr (-6) on the 109-player leaderboard. His opening round featured one eagle, five birdies, and 12 pars. Maxwell eagled the 540-yard par-5 11th hole and added birdies on holes 2, 9, 14, 15, and 17 to secure the outright lead heading into Monday's second round.
As a team, Utah Valley shot a 3-over-par 291 and sits alone in 14th place on the 20-team leaderboard. Host Loyola Maryland leads the field at 8-under-par 280.
Isaiah Ellis carded a 1-over-par 73 and is tied for 53rd place, while Ty Brady sits tied for 64th after posting a 2-over-par 74. Colby Hutchens and JJ Tomsick are tied for 113th after each recorded a 7-over-par 79.
