LAS CRUCES, N.M. — Britney Moreno, Emma Haygood, and Bailey Marvin each homered as Utah Valley rolled to a 10-0 run-rule victory over UMass Lowell in a Saturday split in Las Cruces.
The Wolverines (2-2) capped the night falling 7-6 to the hosts New Mexico State in walk-off fashion in a back-and-forth game.
GAME ONE
Payge Armendariz and Cam Davis combined to shut out the River Hawks in the opener. Armendariz struck out five over three scoreless frames, while Davis locked down the other two with a pair of strikeouts.
The Wolverines set the tone early with a five-spot in the top of the first courtesy of a pair of home runs. Britney Moreno led off the game with a solo homer, the first by a Wolverine to start a contest since 2019. After UVU loaded the bases, Emma Haygood parked a two-out, two-strike grand slam to make it 5-0.
Utah Valley wasn't done there, rallying for three more with two outs in the second. Amber Rodriguez and Angelique Mann roped back-to-back doubles, then Bailey Marvin launched her second home run of the young season to make it 8-0.
The first three Wolverines reached to start the fourth, with the third being an RBI single from Marvin. Marvin's six RBIs are the most through three games since Britney Vansway in 2017. Kendyl Purdy plated the 10th and final run of the game after reaching on a fielder's choice that scored Mann.
GAME TWO
After a fairly uneventful first three frames, the Aggies broke through with a four-run burst in the bottom of the fourth. Devin Elam hit a solo home run to right center to open the scoring, then rallied for four more on four singles and a trio of free passes.
Utah Valley answered right back with the first five Wolverines reaching to tie the game. Tatum Hall and Mya Higareda each wore hit by pitches and Kendyl Purdy reached on a single to load the bases, then Moreno worked a walk to bring home the first run. Rodriguez then roped a triple down the right field to clear the bases and tie the game at four.
Two more Wolverines came across in the sixth on an error by the right fielder to give Utah Valley a 6-4 lead entering the final frame.
NMSU rallied for three in the home half of the seventh to earn the walk-off victory.
