LAST TIME OUT
The Wolverines were swept by Stanford this weekend in California but had some bright spots offensively.
Mason Strong finished 6-for-16 with a home run and five RBIs, while
Kaden Carpenter added two home runs to help spark the UVU offense.
Hunter Katschke remained hot, driving in seven runs with two doubles and a home run over the weekend.
Utah Valley looked to win the series opener behind
Jacob Heppner's seven-inning, two-run outing on Saturday evening, but the Cardinal spoiled his season-high effort, which also tied a career mark for the junior.
Chance Wallace had two solid outings out of the bullpen, logging 2 1/3 innings, allowing two hits with two strikeouts.
SCOUTING THE COYOTES
Cal State San Bernardino enters the weekend at 14-12 and has won its last nine games. The Coyotes are just outside the NCAA Division II Top 25 but are receiving votes in the West Region poll. They swept Cal State Los Angeles last weekend, outscoring CSULA 62-23 over four games.
The Coyotes are hitting .354 as a team this season and averaging more than 10 runs per game. Tyson Pettingill, Eddie Alfaro, Dom Dominguez and Garret Barto are all hitting above .400, with Dominguez and Barto each adding 10 home runs.
On the mound, CSUSB has a 7.74 ERA entering the weekend. Devyn Hernandez is 2-1 with an 8.31 ERA and 31 strikeouts. He is coming off a seven-inning, eight-strikeout performance last weekend. The pitching staff relies heavily on strikeouts, totaling more than 200 this season with only 90 walks.
CATCHING FIRE
Katschke continues to swing a hot bat for the Wolverines, going 15-for-33 over his last 10 games with five home runs and six doubles. Eleven of those 15 hits have gone for extra bases. He has recorded RBIs in each of the last five games.
ALL-TIME AGAINST NON-DI
This will be the first meeting between the Coyotes and Wolverines, but UVU holds a 22-16 all-time record against non-Division I opponents. A majority of those losses came during UVU's early years at the Division I level. The Wolverines are 12-0 since the 2010 season and have won their last 10 games against non-DI competition.
UP NEXT
The Wolverines will play their first in-state rival of the 2026 season on Tuesday night when Utah visits UCCU Ballpark. First pitch is scheduled for 6:05 p.m. MT. It will be the first of three meetings between UVU and the Utes this season. Utah Valley will then travel to California for a three-game series against future Big West foe Cal State Bakersfield.
