Utah Valley will divide and conquer this weekend, sending athletes to three different meets across two states. The Wolverines will compete at the UNLV Rebel ELITE in Las Vegas, as well as the Stanford Invitational and Mike Fanelli Track Classic in the Bay Area, on April 3 and 4.
Utah Valley's top distance runners and throwers will compete at the Stanford Invitational, with representatives in the men's and women's 1500-meter, 5k, steeple, shot put, discus, and hammer, as well as the women's 10k.Â
Just up the road in San Francisco, UVU will also have athletes competing in the women's 5k, steeple, and 10k, as well as the men's steeple at the Mike Fanelli Track Classic hosted by San Francisco State. The rest of the Wolverines — sprints, jumps, middle distance, and the remaining throwers — will compete in Las Vegas.Â
LAST TIME OUT
Utah Valley hosted its lone home meet of the season, the UVU Collegiate Invitational. Wind played a major factor, hampering the distance runners but aiding the sprinters to some impressive numbers.
On the men's side, Kade Thompson, Gavin Stafford, and Garrett Nelson all posted new PRs and top-10 times in the 100m at 10.20, 10.24, and 10.49 respectively. Thompson's time is the best in the WAC this season and ranks 14th in the nation entering the week, while Stafford's is second in the WAC and 23rd nationally.Â
Thompson, Stafford, Nelson, and Collin Petersen also combined for an impressive showing in the 4x100 at 39.90, good for No. 7 all-time. James Duncan improved on his outdoor season debut in the 110mH, moving up from 10th to third with a time of 14.19.
On the women's side, Eme Stout entered the top 10 at No. 5 with a new PR of 11.74 that ranks third-best in the WAC so far this season. Stout also ran the 4x100, helping the Wolverines to a second-place finish at 46.62, and was named this week's WAC Track Athlete of the Week.Â
Maddie Passmore had herself a day, matching the school record in the triple jump at 12.26m and winning the long jump at 5.98m, which ranks No. 2 in school history. Passmore was named the WAC Field Athlete of the Week, her second as a Wolverine after winning it during indoor season.
In the hammer, Eddie Garcia improved his standing at No. 4 all-time with a new PR of 57.12m, while Andrew Turner moved up to fifth with a top mark of 55.75m. Later in the day on the women's side, Cale Stinebaugh entered the top 10 in the shot put with a new best of 13.27m, good for ninth all-time.
Grace Degarimore won the women's shot put with a mark of 14.64m, falling just short of the new PR she set at Utah Tech, and later won the discus at 47.52m. Stinebaugh took third with a top throw of 43.72m, falling .06m short of her PR set at Utah Tech. Trevor Hill won the men's shot put with a season-best 16.81m.
