Wolverines Surge Early Behind Block, Fall in High-Scoring Finale

STEPHENVILLE, Texas — Utah Valley lost the series finale to Tarleton State, 13-9, on Sunday afternoon at the Tarleton Baseball Complex. Brody Block finished 2-for-5 with a career-high four RBIs in the game, his second-inning homer sparked a seven-run third inning to help UVU (15-28, 1-8) to an early lead. Rayner Heinrich and Slade McCloud each drove in three runs for Tarleton State (28-15, 8-4), who rallied in the late innings.
 
Chance Wallace got the start for the Wolverines and tossed two innings, allowing two hits and one run, which came on a homer by McCloud. The Wolverines responded with a seven-run third inning, their highest-scoring third inning of the season. Utah Valley took advantage of five walks issued by the Tarleton State pitching staff in the inning. Block homered to left-center to give UVU a 3-1 lead and start the scoring. Derek Houston extended the lead to 4-1 on a sacrifice fly before another run scored on a wild pitch. Jimmy De Anda singled with two outs for the final offensive punch of the inning and put the Wolverines in front, 7-1. 
 
The Texans got a pair of runs back in the home half to cut the lead to 7-3. Bradley Gilbert finished with four innings of long relief for UVU and faced 20 hitters in the game.
 
The Wolverines extended their lead in the top of the fifth when Hamlin homered to left to make it 8-3. It was his fourth homer of the year and first in conference play for the senior. Utah Valley kept the inning alive with two outs, as Massey recorded his second hit of the day with a single before scoring on Block's single, giving the visitors a 9-3 advantage.
 
Tarleton State's offense began to chip away at the six-run deficit in the sixth with a two-run homer from Brady Englett before adding one in the seventh and seven in the eighth to come back and complete the sweep.

Utah Valley returns home next weekend to face California Baptist. The three-game WAC series is set to begin Friday, May 1, at 6:05 p.m. MT. The series will continue with a 3:05 p.m. MT start on Saturday before the finale on Sunday at 12:05 p.m. MT.
