Box Score PROVO, Utah – Brigham Young University defeated Utah Valley, 13-3, in the second edition of this year's Crosstown Clash on Tuesday night at Miller Park.
Hunter Katschke finished 3-for-4 with a home run to lead UVU (16-35). BYU (26-25) used a seven-run fourth inning to pull away, led by Ezra McNaughton, Tualau Wolfgramm, and Matt Hansen, who each recorded three RBIs.
The Wolverines struck first in the top of the opening inning on a solo home run from
Kaden Carpenter, his 14th of the season. BYU answered in the bottom half with a two-run shot from McNaughton off the scoreboard in right field to take a 2-1 lead before adding two more runs on a single from Hansen to move ahead 4-1 after one inning.
Utah Valley looked to rally in the third inning after Katschke recorded his second hit of the game with a single and
Brody Block was hit by a pitch to put two runners on base. A wild pitch later scored Katschke to cut the deficit to 4-2, but the inning ended on a double play.
BYU pulled away with a seven-run fourth inning to build an 11-2 advantage. UVU got a run back in the fifth when Katschke launched a 441-foot home run over the scoreboard in left field for his 46th career homer, tying Wyoming's Sky Smeltzer for eighth on the WAC career home runs list.
Utah Valley threatened again later in the fifth inning after Block singled to right field, Carpenter walked and
Derek Houston was hit by a pitch to load the bases. BYU turned to reliever Luke Sterner, who induced a groundout from
Trenton Rowan to end the inning.
