Following Sunday's contest, the Wolverines will get back on the bus and drive home before hosting BYU next Monday night at 7pm and then traveling to Utah on Tuesday the 19th for a 2pm game.
Wolverine Update:
The Wolverines split last weekend against Northern Colorado during a Saturday doubleheader. In the opener, Northern Colorado-??s pitching staff allowed only one run on five hits, with the only run of the game coming off of Eli Slesk's first home run of the season.
In the 2nd game the Wolverines scored four in the first and eight in the second to jump out quickly and run away with the game 14-1. Trent Perry and Dan Bulow hit two home runs apiece, while Kevin Hashimoto hit his second long ball of 2005. Brady Drake went the distance allowing no earned runs on just five hits while striking out six.
Quick Hits:
- Eli Slesk hit his first home run of the season in Saturday-??s loss at Northern Colorado. The sophomore had a solid week, going .400 at the plate while playing flawless defense at shortstop for the Wolverines.
- The Division-I Independent schedule is half way through with Utah Valley currently 3-4 vs. other Indepedents. They play eight more games, four with Sacramento State this weekend and four with South Dakota State next weekend.
- Dan Bulow's 10 home runs are tops on the team and is the most in all of Division-I Independent baseball. The sophomore has hit his 10 long balls in 86 at-bats. That's an average of one home run every 8.6 at-bats.
Anything You Can Do I Can Do Better:
Coming into game two of Saturday's doubleheader at Northern Colorado, Dan Bulow lead the team with eight home runs with Trent Perry was just behind him with seven. In the first inning of the 14 1 win, Perry tied Bulow with a two-run blast for his eight homer. Two batters later, Bulow one-upped Perry with a two-run shot for his ninth.
An inning later Perry blasted a three-run home run for his ninth to again tie for the team lead. But once again, two batters later, Bulow regained the lead by hitting a mammoth shot to left center for his 10th home run of 2005.
A Good Forecast?
As it has seemed like the bad weather has followed the Wolverines wherever they-??ve gone, excuse them if they look at this week-??s forecast with a little bit of skepticism. Nevertheless, weather.com has Tuesday forecast as mostly sunny with temperatures in the high 60-??s. Wednesday-??s forecast calls for another warm day in the high 60-??s with cloudy skies and wind. The weekend series in Sacramento is supposed to be even better with temps in the 70-??s with a lot of sun.
Grand Re-Opening:
The grand opening for beautiful new Parkway Crossing Stadium was scheduled for the home opener against Southern Utah at the end of March. But because of bad weather that was forced to be pushed back to next weekend against South Dakota State.
The barbeque on the berm for Utah Valley State alumni is scheduled for Friday, April 22nd at 5:30pm. For more information on the Grand Opening, go to wolverinesports.net/baseball.
Scouting the Opposition:
Utah (11-19, 4-8 in MWC) leads the all-time series between the Wolverines and the Utes after winning 5-3 last week in Salt Lake City. The Utes are coming off of a record setting weekend after sweeping Air Force by a cumulative score of 62-12 over three games. Utah ended the series with a 32-4 win and are now on a four-game winning streak.
Lewis &Â Clark State (28-5) is currently ranked 2nd in the NAIA baseball rankings. They beat the Wolverines 18-3 in Lewiston, Idaho earlier in the season in a game that the Utah Valley State pitching staff set a school record after giving up 14 walks. The Warriors are hitting .333 as a team while their pitching staff has just a 2.07 ERA as a team.
Sacramento State (12-20) is the fourth Division-I Independent team that Utah Valley will face this season. So far, the Wolverines have a 3-4 record against DI Independents. The Hornets record doesn't indicate the type of team they have put on the field. Their wins include a 4-3 win over perennial national contender Stanford. They-??ve also faced Oregon State three times and Washington State three times as well.
BYU (23-8-1, 10-2 in MWC) continues to have success in 2005 as they have beaten Utah Valley three times so far this season. They are currently the top dogs in the Mountain West Conference after taking two out of three games from UNLV in Las Vegas last weekend.
On Deck:
The Wolverines will host South Dakota State for four games on April 22-23. Both days will feature doubleheaders as the weekend is scheduled to be the grand opening of Parkway Crossing Stadium.
