Utah Valley State begins its toughest week of the season as they host BYU on Monday night at 7:00pm, followed by a 2:00pm match-up at Utah on Tuesday. The team will travel Wednesday morning to Phoenix, Arizona and take on Arizona State in Tempe at 7:30pm MST. The Sun Devils are ranked 17th in the nation by Baseball America and Collegiate Baseball. Following an off day on Thursday, the Wolverines will travel south to Tucson and take on #8 (Collegiate Baseball) Arizona in a three-game series beginning Friday at 8:00pm MST. Saturday's game will also be at 8:00pm with the finale coming Sunday at 1:00pm MST.
Wolverine Update:
The Wolverines have lost two in a row now after losing a heartbreaker to Utah on Tuesday in 10 innings, 7-6. Utah third baseman Jay Brossman drove in two runs with two out in the 7th inning to tie the game and then Joe Mozeleski drove in the game winner in the top of the 10th inning to give the Utes the victory.
Trent Perry hit a grand slam in the first inning for his 13th home run of the year and his 53rd RBI of 2005. Eli Slesk, Kevin Hashimoto and Cory Newton all had two hits for the Wolverines. Hashimoto also had two steals, an RBI and a run scored as the Utes gained a 2-1 edge on the season series. The Wolverines and Utes are scheduled for two more games and currently have one game postponed with the two coaches still deciding whether or not to attempt a make-up of the game.
Quick Hits:
- Sophomore Dan Bulow leads the Wolverines in home runs with 14 and is tied for 9th nationally in home runs per game at .36.
- The Wolverines wrapped up Division-I Independent play last week after the series with South Dakota State. Utah Valley finished 5-10 against Independent schools with wins coming against North Dakota State (2), South Dakota State (2) and Northern Colorado.
- Eli Slesk is the team leader in batting with a .393 average and is also hitting .474 in 10 games against other Division-I Independent teams. Another Wolverine that had success against D-I Independent schools is reliever Chad Smout, who has a 0.00 ERA in 6 2/3 innings of work.
Orem to Tempe to Columbus:
Former Utah Valley State star and NJCAA All-American Mitch Jones is also a former NCAA All-American at Arizona State. Jones, from Mountain View High School in Orem, finished his junior college career at Utah Valley as the single season (23) and career (41) home run leader. In 2000, he broke ASU-??s single season home run record when he hit 27 homers. He is currently playing for the AAA Columbus Clippers in the New York Yankee organization and recently hit for the cycle in one game and followed that up with an encore performance of three home runs the following game.
Senior Sendoff:
The end is near for the Utah Valley State seniors. There are nine seniors on the Wolverine roster and two of them, Jed Jensen and Kevin Hashimoto, will be the first four-year seniors in school history. The two players began their careers as junior college athletes and stuck with the program during this transition into Division-I Athletics.
2005 Season Highlights to Date:
- Senior Trent Perry was named CollegeBaseballInsider.com's National Player of the Week after his performance against North Dakota State and Air Force February 18-20. Perry was 10-for-18 (.555) with four home runs and 16 runs batted in during the four-game sweep of the two clubs.
- Kory Drew was named Division-I Independent Newcomer of the Week on March 29th after going 10-for-23 (.435) with a grand slam and eight RBI against BYU and Southern Utah.
- The Wolverines beat in-state rival BYU for the first time in school history on March 18th (7-to-4) as Kyle Tash threw a complete-game and Nick Connor went 4-for-4 in the win.
On Deck:
The Wolverines will wrap of the 2005 season on Tuesday, May 10th when they host Utah at 7:00pm. It will be the 5th meeting between the Utes and Wolverines during the year. The two teams have split the previous two games at Parkway Crossing Stadium so far with Utah Valley winning 18-6 on April 12th and the Utes winning 7-6 in 10 innings on April 26th.
