ALBUQUERQUE, New Mexico - Despite a strong effort from starter
Kalen Parsons, Utah Valley State dropped its second straight game to New Mexico, 3-0 Saturday afternoon in Albuquerque. New Mexico south paw Danny Ray Herrera (3-0, 1.72) was superb, as he threw a complete-game six-hit shutout while striking out seven Wolverines in the 2 hour and 14 minute pitcher's duel.
It's the second time this season that Utah Valley State (2-7) has been shutout this season, both by lefthanded pitchers.
Parsons (0-2, 5.60) controlled the New Mexico bats early and hadn't allowed a hit until Ian Hollick hit a home run with one out in the fifth inning to give the Lobos a 1-0 lead.
New Mexico (7-4) added two big insurance runs in the sixth when Jay Russell and Chris Carlson hit back-to-back doubles followed by an RBI single from Daniel Stovall, extending the lead to 3-0.
Parsons worked six innings, allowing the three runs on just four hits and gave way to
Dan Christensen who allowed one hit over two innings of work and hasn't allowed an earned run over 4.1 innings so far this season.
Cory Newton was 3-for-3 for Utah Valley as all six hits came from the fifth through eighth hitters in the order. But the top of UV's order struggled, as the top four hitters were a combined 0-for-15 off of Herrera.
The Wolverines had three opportunities with runners on third and less than two outs, but two double plays and a strikeout kept Utah Valley off the scoreboard.
Eli Slesk went 0-for-3 to end his season long hitting streak, but
Brad Hales extended his streak to nine games when he hit a lead off single in the eighth inning.
The two teams will wrap up the series tomorrow at 1:00pm MST. Utah Valley State will start
Kyle Tash (2-0, 2.81) while New Mexico's starter has yet be announced.
