RENO, Nevada - Shawn Scobee had a grand slam and five RBI on the day as Nevada topped Utah Valley State 11-5 on Saturday. The win for the Wolfpack (16-20) evened up the series with the Wolverines (13-28) with the rubber match set for Sunday at 1pm PST.
The Wolverines jumped on the board first after
Kade Boyer blasted a 3-2 pitch over the wall in left-center in the third inning for his second home run of the season.
Nevada then loaded the bases with two out in the bottom of the third before Scobee cleared the bases with his 13th home run and second grand slam of the of the season.
Utah Valley got two runs back in the fourth when
Dan Bulow hit his eighth home run of the season, scoring
Chris Benson and cutting the lead to 4-3.
The Wolfpack added a single run in the bottom of the fourth to make it 5-3 and then with two out in the inning an error in right field helped Nevada to two more runs in the inning and extending the lead to 7-3.
The Wolverines scored two more in the fifth with two out on an RBI single by Benson to score
Eli Slesk and an RBI double by
Canyon Vance.
But that's as close as UV would get as the Wolfpack would add a single run in the sixth on a sac-fly by Durell Williams, a single run in the seventh on a solo home run by Dan Eastham and two runs in the eighth on a solo shot by Brian Joynt and an RBI double by Scobee.
Adam Openshaw led Utah Valley with three hits while Benson was 2-for-4 with an RBI.
Kalen Parsons (2-8) suffered the loss for Utah Valley State while Travis Sutton (4-2) earned the win. Matt Renfree earned his first save after allowing just one hit in 3 2/3 innings in relief for Nevada.
The win for Nevada comes a day after being shutout on a four-hitter by Wolverine senior
Kam Mickolio and ends a streak of eight losses in its last nine games.
Ryan Jessop will get the start tomorrow for Utah Valley State opposite Wolfpack hurler Ryan Rodriguez.
