What's On Deck ...
Utah Valley State (17-35) will participate in the Division-I Independent Tournament this week in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The six team tournament will feature host South Dakota State along with IPFW, New York Tech, North Dakota State and Northern Colorado.
The Wolverines will play South Dakota and New York Tech in the round robin portion of the tournament on Thursday and Friday before bracketed play begins on Saturday.
The top two teams from each pool will play in a final-four tournament with the winners facing off in the championship on Sunday. Each team is guaranteed to play four games during the weekend.
The Wolverines are coming off of a 10-3 loss at the hands of neighbor BYU on Tuesday night in Provo. In the loss, Dan Bulow hit his 11th home run of the year but five UV errors proved costly.Â
Utah Valley State vs. D-I Independents ...
Utah Valley State is 3-2 overall against other D-I Independents in 2006. The Wolverines split two games at UC Davis (not in the tournament) in March and took two out of three over Northern Colorado in April.
The all-time series between Utah Valley and Northern Colorado has been a competitive one, as each team has won five times in the 10 meetings. UV is not scheduled to meet the Bears, but the teams could play in the bracketed portion of the tournament.
The Wolverines have met South Dakota State five times prior to this week's tournament, with the Jacks winning three of the five including a 9-6 win at the 2005 Independent Tournament.
New York Tech topped Utah Valley 13-2 in the only meeting between the two schools. That game was the opener of the 2005 Independent Tournament.
Utah Valley and North Dakota State played one another twice during the 2005 season with UV winning both meetings. Like Northern Colorado, UV and NDSU aren't scheduled to meet unless they square off in bracketed play.
Should the Wolverines meet IPFW, it would be the first time that the schools will have played each other in baseball.
