What's On Deck ...
Utah Valley State (15-32) has a busy schedule with a three-game series at Pac-10 opponent Washington State and a single game at Utah. The series at WSU begins Saturday night and concludes on Monday before the Wolverines will return home for a quick turnaround Tuesday at Utah.
Utah Valley and Washington State have met six times previously, most recently in a four-game series in Pullman, Washington in 2005 where the Cougars took three out of four from UV. WSU leads the all-time series 4-2.
The game at Utah will be the final of six games between the Wolverines and Utes. Utah has won four out of five so far in 2006.
Utah Valley State is coming off of a 13-6 win over neighbor BYU on Tuesday in the final home game for 10 Wolverine seniors.
Freshman Chris Benson had four hits while senior Reno Mendenhall had three hits including a home run. Senior Nick Connor raised his average to .453 with a 3-for-4 night while another senior, Canyon Vance, belted a two-run home run to break a 2-2 tie in the fifth inning.
The Wolverines scored 11 consecutive runs over two innings to take a 13-2 lead in their most decisive win their series against BYU.
Utah Valley State vs. the Pac-10 ...
The fledgling Utah Valley State program hasn't been shy about scheduling some of the nation's elite, including five of the nine Pac-10 schools during the Wolverines three seasons at the NCAA level.
Prior to this weekend's series at Washington State, Utah Valley is 4-15 against Pac-10 schools, with wins over Oregon State (2004), Arizona State (2005) and Washington State (2005).
The Wolverines have played one Pac-10 school so far this season when they traveled to Corvallis, Oregon to take on Oregon State at the end of March.
Utah Valley was competitive with the Beavers, but OSU was too much in a 7-5, 9-4, 13-9 sweep of the Wolverines.
Scouting the Opposition ...
Washington State (29-16) took two out of three from Pac-10 foe USC last weekend in Pullman and have six out of seven overall.
As a team the Cougars are batting .324 while the pitching staff holds a very solid 4.20 ERA.
Monday's starter, freshman Jared Prince, is a two-way player and impressive in both aspects.Â
Offensively Prince is batting .426 with four home runs and 44 RBI while on the mound he leads the team with a 6-1 record and a 3.80 ERA.
Utah is 22-20 pending a weekend series at TCU. The Utes are batting .319 with 52 home runs as a club with senior SS Ryan Khoury leading the way with a .450 average and 11 homers.
Up Next ...
