This Week's Action
Utah Valley (17-24) welcomes Washington (20-18, 6-6) to Orem for a three-game series this week beginning Thursday at 7pm. It will be the first time in the Wolverines' four-year NCAA history that they will host a team from the Pac-10 Conference.
UV comes into the series 0-3 all-time against the Huskies and 5-20 all-time against Pac-10 schools. Washington was ranked 29th when it swept a series during the 2005 season in Seattle (3-1, 11-1, 6-5).
The Wolverines have won four out of five games including two of three last weekend against Dixie State. UV had a 3-1 week overall after defeating Utah 10-4 last Tuesday.
Freshman and two-way player Jace Brinkerhoff was impressive at the plate last week as he went 10-for-17 (.588) with a home run, three doubles, a triple and three RBI while slugging 1.059. For his efforts the freshman from Spanish Fork was named the Division I Independent Newcomer of the Week.
Brinkerhoff came into the week 1st among all independent players with a .412 batting average on the season. On the mound, Brinkerhoff has thrown two complete games and is second on the team in innings pitched.
Derrick Thomas leads the club with nine home runs and 41 runs batted in while batting .386. Eli Slesk is hitting .342 for UV while freshman Austin Heaps is batting .333 with five homers and 36 RBI.
Junior pitcher Marcus Moore is second among independent pitchers with a 2.76 ERA. He is 4-3 on the year with three saves and has thrown two complete games for the Wolverines.
Scouting the Huskies
Washington lost two out of three conference games last weekend to USC in Seattle. After dropping the first two games, Jason Erickson and Nick Hagadone combined on a three-hit shutout in a 6-0 over the Trojans. Hagadone threw 4 1/3 innings of no-hit relief in earning the win. He is 5-1 with a 1.76 ERA on the season.
Offensively the Huskies are led by Bradley Boyer and Curt Rindal. Boyer is batting .345 with 10 doubles and two home runs while Rindal is hitting .338 with a team-high eight homers and 38 runs batted in.
