BOISE, Idaho - The Utah Valley University wrestling team fell at No. 13 Boise State 34-10 Wednesday night. With the loss the Wolverines drop to 0-2 on the season as Boise State improves to 4-0.
"Boise State is a very solid team," UVU wrestling head coach Greg Williams said. "Our guys came out and battled but just didn't show me the same fight and intensity that we showed last week (at Iowa State). Tomorrow night we will look for more aggressiveness from our guys. I would like to see them finish better in the positions that they will be in."
The Wolverines were led again by sophomore Benjamin Kjar (125) as he beat his Boise State counterpart Alan Bartelli (12-3). Kjar took an early 4-1 advantage after the first period after two takedowns. After the second period Kjar opened it up as he took control taking the match to 7-3. Kjar was too much, as he finished off Bartelli with another takedown and near fall. With the victory the 20th ranked Kjar improved his season record to 6-2.
Picking up the other victory for Utah Valley in dual action against the nationally ranked Broncos, was true-freshman Adam Fager (197). Fager, who hails from Layton, Utah, won by fall 4:55 into his match over BSU's Ryan Allen. Fager improves to 7-4 on the season.
In one of the closest matches on the night UVU redshirt-freshman Brad Darrington (174) lost only by two points (6-4) to Kurt Swartz of Boise State. The match started off with both grapplers trying to get on the scoreboard as it was scoreless on the end of the first round. At the end of the second it was still tied, now 2-2, and in the final round it was tied 4-4 after Darrington received a two-point reversal with 35 seconds remaining. Coming down to the wire Swartz was able to win as he awarded a reversal with only a mere 11 seconds remaining.
In another tight matchup UVU junior Jeffrey Newby (141) ended up falling to BSU's Cory Fish 6-1. Newby trailed Fish by only one-point at the end of the first period but Fish came back and won by five in the end.
Utah Valley is still searching to fill a vacated heavyweight slot on their roster this season and tonight it was sophomore Diego Avalon that answered the call from Coach Williams. Avalon who normally competes at 174-pounds battled against the Broncos heavyweight Sam Zylstra. The bout was scoreless at the end of the first period in a very competitive match but in the second period Zylstra pinned Avalon for the victory.

UVU will try to rebound from the loss by competing against Portland State and Simon Fraser in a double-dual Thursday beginning at 6 p.m. (MT) in Portland. The Wolverines will remain in Oregon and take part at the Best of the West Open Saturday.
