OREM, Utah - After going 2-2 at last week's River City Classic, Utah Valley baseball returns to the Beehive State to play at in-state foe BYU on Tuesday at 6pm at Larry H. Miller Field.
The Wolverines (3-9-1) defeated the Cougars (6-7) thanks to Dan Christensen's five-hit complete game effort in Sacramento on Friday. Christensen struck out two and didn't allow a walk in earning his first complete game win.
For his performance, Christensen was named to the River City Classic all-tournament team along with third baseman Jace Brinkerhoff. Brinkerhoff hit .353 with two doubles, a triple and eight RBI.
Utah Valley opened the tournament with a narrow 4-3 loss to the champions of the classic, Portland. After defeating BYU on Friday, the Wolverines got another strong pitching performance to top Sacramento State 7-2. Aaron Brady tossed eight innings to earn his first win on the mound for UV against the Hornets.
In Sunday's weekend finale, the Wolverines looked to have their third straight win in hand before San Jose State scored four run in the bottom of the ninth to win 6-5.
Utah Valley's last four losses have all come by just a single run, including two losses where the Wolverines have carried a three-run lead into the bottom of the ninth.
Brinkerhoff is hitting .382 with 15 runs batted in to lead the team while Ryan Jones is batting .357.
BYU is 6-7 after also going 2-2 at last week's River City Classic. The Cougars defeated UC Davis and San Jose State and lost to the Wolverines and Sac State. Dan Vargas leads four players batting .318 or higher with a .367 average for BYU.
The Wolverines will head to the Northwest for six games in six days against Gonzaga, Washington and Portland. Utah Valley will play three games at Gonzaga beginning Monday, March 17. They'll play at Washington three times beginning on March 20th with a single game against Portland on the 21st on Washington's field in Seattle.
