Wolverines Fall 4-2, 9-6 at Gonzaga

March 14, 2009

SPOKANE, Wash. - Utah Valley lost both games of a doubleheader, 4-2 and 9-6, as Gonzaga completed a four-game sweep on Saturday.

The Wolverines (5-11) have now lost six straight as they prepare to head to Corvallis, Oregon for two games against Oregon State and two against St. Mary's next week.

In the first game, Cole Anderson's two-run home run in the third inning gave Utah Valley the lead, but it was the only time the Wolverines would score in the game.

The Bulldogs (11-5) scored three in the third to take a 4-2 lead with Evan Wells and Drew Heid both driving home runs with base hits. Neither team scored the rest of the way.

Jory Jensen came on in relief of starter Devin Nelson and threw 4.1 scoreless innings, allowing just two hits and walk in the outing.

The Gonzaga pitching staff combined to strike out 13 Wolverines, including 10 by starter Ryan Carpenter in 7.0 innings of work. Jacob Hiatt got the final four out, two by strikeout, to earn the save.

Kevin Arendse's two-out single in the ninth brought the tying run to the plate, but Jake Rickenbach's liner deflected off of the pitcher right to Wells at second, who threw to first end the game.

In the series finale, Gonzaga scored an unearned run in the first to take a 1-0 lead before Rickenbach's two-out single with the bases loaded gave UVU a 2-1 lead.

That advantage was short lived though. The Bulldogs scored five in the bottom of the second with the big blow a bases loaded triple with two outs by Anthony Synegal.

Gonzaga tacked on a run in the third before Ernesto Ortiz made it 8-2 with a solo home run to left.

Single runs in the sixth and seventh trimmed the deficit to four. Dick Bargewell brought home the first run on a groundout that scored Hinckley and Chris Benson singled home Goose Kallunki in the seventh. The Bulldogs then made it a 9-4 game when Heid scored on a wild pitch in the eighth.

Utah Valley made it interesting in the ninth when Brock Sargent and Arendse drove in runs with back-to-back two-out singles to bring the tying run to the plate in the form of Bargewell.

C.J. McClure came on and got Bargewell to ground out to short to end the game and earn the save.

Steven Ames moved to 4-0 with the win while Justin Smith dropped to 1-2 after taking the loss.
