POWELL, Wyo. - The Utah Valley wrestling team opened the 2010-11 season strong Saturday at Northwest College's Trapper Open as 12 different Wolverines placed fourth or better. Sophomore 125-pounder Paul Johnson and senior 133-pounder Flint Ray both reigned supreme at the open as they each managed to win their respective weight classes.
"We looked great today," UVU head coach Greg Williams said. "Flint (Ray) looked really, really good and we had a couple others that should have won it as well. For the first tournament I was pleased. We looked dominant and yet we still have a lot of things to work on."
Of the 12 placers for the Wolverines on the day, two came in first, three in second, six in third and one placed fourth.
Finishing in second place for UVU was freshman 125-pounder Colby Christensen (unattached), senior 141-pounder Justin Morrill and junior 184-pounder Brad Darrington (unattached). Freshman 133-pounder Derek Malan (unattached), sophomore 141-pounder Logan Wilson (unattached), sophomore 149-pounder Josh Wilson, redshirt-freshman 165-pounder Abner Cook, sophomore 174-pounder Monte Schmalhaus (unattached) and sophomore heavyweight Eric McAllister all placed third. Finishing in fourth place on the day was freshman 165-pounder Colby Barlocker.
Cook and Darrington had even more impressive performances at the opening tournament as they still managed to place despite having to bump up a weight-class due to the 1.5%-per-week-rule.
UVU was dominant in its opening season action as the 12 wrestlers placed and 12 reached the semis. Sophomore 141-pounder Wyatt Ray and freshman 197-pounder, who had also bumped up a weight class for the day to compete at heavyweight, Trevor Rupp both had solid showings as they made the semi-finals.
The Wolverines will be back in action next Saturday, Nov. 13, in Laramie, Wyo., when they participate at the Cowboy Open.
