OREM, Utah Utah Valley begins a busy week in-state as it travels to Salt Lake City to face Utah at Spring Mobile Ballpark for the second straight midweek match up between the two teams. First pitch is set for 6 p.m. Junior-lefthander Zane Gray will start for the Wolverines (7-10) with the Utes (12-9) slated to start senior-righthander Andrew Wilding.
About the Wolverines
The Wolverines were 2-2 last week, winning 6-4 at Utah on Tuesday before dropping a series at home to Gonzaga. Against the Utes, Billy Burgess had two doubles and a triple and drove in three runs and UVU overcame an early 4-1 deficit to win.
The weekend was a different story as Utah Valley and Gonzaga combined to score 73 runs on 80 hits in the series' first two games. The Bulldogs won 23-12 in the opener before the Wolverines scored three touchdowns and held Gonzaga to two touchdowns and a field goal in a 21-17 win. Saturday's rubber match went to the Bulldogs, 8-3, in a game that saw the Wolverines issue 13 free passes -- eight walks and five hit batters.
Jake Rickenbach was 4-for-5 in all three games of the series, batting .800 (12-for-15 overall) with a home run. Chris Benson extended his hit streak to 15 games and is currently second in the country with a .513 batting average. As of Monday, the Great West Conference boasted the top two hitters in the nation with Texas-Pan American's Garrett Bivone currently leading with a .526 average.
On Deck
The Wolverines host Southern Utah in a four-game series beginning Thursday at 6 p.m. Friday will be a doubleheader beginning at 3 p.m. and Saturday's finale is scheduled for 1 p.m.
About the Opposition
Utah swept a three-game series over Great West baseball school Northern Colorado over the weekend. The Utes answered a seven-run seventh by the Bears with seven runs of their own and then scored in the bottom of the ninth to win their third straight.
C.J. Cron continues to lead Utah at the plate, batting .405 with six home runs and 26 batted in.
