OREM, Utah - Utah Valley looks to continue its in-state success this week when the Wolverines host Southern Utah in a four-game series scheduled to begin Thursday at 6 p.m. at Brent Brown Ballpark. The team's will play a doubleheader on Friday beginning at 3 p.m. with the series finale on Saturday at 1 p.m.
Saturday's contest will also be Hometown Hero Day at the ballpark for Brock Sargent. Posters of Sargent will be handed out prior to the game and the senior pitcher will sign autographs following the game. Fans from his hometown of St. George can get into the game for just $1.
UVU is currently 6-0 against Utah schools after a 10-8 win at Utah on Tuesday, its second road win over the Utes in seven days.
Jace Brinkerhoff was 3-for-3 with a home run, double and five runs batted in and drove home the game-winning run in the top of the eighth inning. Austin Heaps was also perfect, going 4-for-4 with two doubles while Kevin Arendse had two RBI for the Wolverines. Brian Whatcott retired three of the four batters he faced in the ninth to earn his second save.
Chris Benson had a base hit in the second inning to extend his hitting streak to 16 games. Despite going 1-for-5 and seeing his average drop, Benson is still hitting .494, good enough for third in the nation as of Wednesday. Brinkerhoff has upped his average to .402 and has an eight-game hitting streak. During the streak he is batting .568 with four home runs.
The Wolverines were 2-2 last week, winning 6-4 at Utah on Tuesday, March 23 before dropping a series at home to Gonzaga over the weekend. Utah Valley and Gonzaga combined to score 73 runs on 80 hits in the series' first two games. The Bulldogs won 23-12 in the opener before the Wolverines won a 21-17 slugfest in the middle game. Saturday's rubber match went to the Bulldogs, 8-3.
The Wolverines begin Great West Conference play next week when they host North Dakota in a four-game series beginning Friday, April 9 at 6 p.m.
Southern Utah (4-17) has lost five straight and owns three of its four wins over Great West school Chicago State. The Wolverines hold a 17-15 edge all-time against the T-Birds after the early-season sweep. During the series, Billy Burgess went 10-for-16 with two home runs and 16 run batted in.
For SUU, Levi Swenson's .327 batting average leads the team while Bucky Aona is hitting .316 with four home runs and is tied for the team lead with 12 runs batted in.
