OREM, Utah - Utah Valley and Utah will meet for the third and final time this season on Tuesday at 6 p.m. at Brent Brown Ballpark in Orem. The Wolverines (14-12) have won the first two meetings between the teams this season, both on the road in Salt Lake City at Spring Mobile Ballpark.
Freshman CJ Healey (0-0, 6.00) will get his first career start for UVU while Utah will start senior and Orem native Andrew Wilding (2-2, 4.18).
UVU enters Tuesday's game on a five-game winning streak after opening the Great West Conference season with a four-game sweep over North Dakota over the weekend. Chris Benson went 2-for-4 on Sunday and extended his hitting streak to 24 games, setting a new school record.
As of Monday, Benson leads the nation with a .479 batting average. The Wolverines rank fourth in the country in batting at .358, eighth in slugging (.554) and are ninth in on-base plus slugging (OPS) at .979.
In last week's wins over North Dakota, several Wolverines hitters had stand-out performances. Jake Rickenbach was 10-for-17 (.588) during the series while Goose Kallunki and Jace Brinkerhoff both hit .471 and Cole McWhorter batted .467. Kallunki had three home runs -- one in each of the final three games -- while Billy Burgess hit his fourth career grand slam and had a three-run homer during the series.
It's the fourth time in school history that someone has hit a home run in at least three straight games. Kirk Doxey hit six home runs over four consecutive games during the 2009 season.
The Wolverines travel to Greeley, Colorado this weekend for a series against Northern Colorado. Both UVU and UNC swept last week's GWC-opening series with the Bears winning four times at Texas-Pan American.
The Utes were swept by UNLV in three close games over the weekend in Mountain West action. Before that though Utah had won seven out of eight with its only loss coming to UVU.
The Wolverines are 2-0 this year against Utah, winning 6-4 and 10-8 in Salt Lake City. Today's game is the final meeting between the schools this season with the Utes holding a slim 17-16 all-time edge.
