GREELEY, Colo. - Goose Kallunki and Cole McWhorter were both moved up in the lineup and both responded with three hits apiece to lead Utah Valley to an 8-5 win at Northern Colorado on Saturday in game one of a scheduled doubleheader. The Wolverines (15-14, 5-1) snapped the Bears' (14-16, 5-1) 10-game winning streak and created a tie between the teams atop the Great West Conference standings.
The second game was delayed 30 minutes due to a lightning strike in the area and was later postponed until Sunday because of rain. The Wolverines (15-14, 5-1) currently lead 4-0 with the bases loaded and one out in the top of the first inning. The teams will finish the current game beginning at noon before the fourth and final game 30 minutes later.
McWhorter, hitting for the first time in the second spot, went 3-for-3 with a pair of doubles and two RBI while Kallunki moved into the sixth spot in the lineup for the first time and homered, hit two doubles and drove in three runs.
The Wolverines took a 4-0 lead in the second on five hits including three doubles. Chris Benson led off with a double and scored when Kallunki doubled. Kevin Arendse then singled home Kallunki before Austin Heaps had a base hit to put runners at first and second.
After a sac bunt from Jason Zundel, Jake Rickenbach hit a sac fly to score Arendse. McWhorter doubled with two outs to plate Heaps and put the Wolverines up four.
Jarod Berggren hit a rare inside-the-park home run to get the Bears on the board before a three-run fifth, aided by a two-run Mark Shannon home run, tied the game at 4-4.
UVU answered with two in the sixth -- Zundel hit a fielder's choice to second that allowed Kallunki to score and McWhorter drew a bases-loaded walk to make it 6-4.
Kallunki hit his home run in the seventh, with Billy Burgess at second, to give the Wolverines a four-run cushion. Berggren hit his second home run of the game, this time out of the park in left, to get UNC within three but Craig Brimhall got TJ Berge to fly out to left to end the game.
Blake Krahenbuhl got the win and moved to 4-1 after going five innings and giving up four runs on seven hits. Brimhall pitched the final two innings and got his second save.
Arendse and Heaps both had two hits as UVU out-hit Northern Colorado 12-9.
